“Why does the Quran say ‘azwāj’ here, and not just ‘groups’?”
Arabic has numerous words for a group, yet the verse specifically uses أَزْوَاجًا. This choice carries layered meaning.
زَوْج refers to a pair, one of a pair, or something joined with its complement. It can describe a husband or wife, or one shoe from a pair of shoes.
The word carries the idea of a counterpart: something understood in relation to another part that complements or contrasts with it.
