The two angels: presence and function

Perspective: NAK’s view

إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى الْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ refers to two angels that met you at the time you were born and continually “meet” you thereafter.

Origin point
At birth, their meeting is assigned.
Continuity
They meet you all the time.
Perspective: Majority view

The two angels are positioned on the right and the left and receive everything that comes from you in terms of actions.

Right

Records good deeds.

Left

Records bad deeds.

Why assign angels when Allah’s knowledge is complete?

This verse is connected to the prior statement of Allah’s closeness (closer than the jugular vein). Though He has no need of angels to know, He informs us that He has assigned them.

Consciousness of our actions

Knowing that angels stand to our right and left, we become more mindful of what we do.

Establishing proof

A recorded register can be presented to a person on the Day of Judgement as evidence.

Mujāhid’s statement

Two angels are assigned to the human in the night and in the day, securing what he does and recording its effect.

Night and day
Continuous coverage across time.
Record of effects
Noting what the person does and its impact.

Language and morphology highlights

يَتَلَقَّى

Reading options: “to meet” (NAK’s understanding) or “to receive” (majority). The context frames the role of the two angels accordingly.

Sense: meet / receive

الْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ

Refers to the two angels who receive. Under NAK’s view, the emphasis is on their “meeting”; under the majority, on their “receiving.”

Dual reference: two angels

قَعِيدٌ

Implies a purposeful, ready state—alert and in anticipation, not merely “sitting.” The form فَعِيل denotes a habitual or permanent condition.

Notes: Singular used though two are meant—either due to their unity or because فَعِيل can serve for singular, dual, and plural usage in Arabic.

Sense: constant readiness
