لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِي غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَاءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ الْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌ

“You were certainly in a state of heedlessness of this, and We have removed from you your cover, so your sight, this Day, is sharp”.

Key concepts

Heedlessness (Ghaflah)

Veil of heedlessness lifted

The explanation clarifies that a covering of heedlessness is removed, revealing the true reality that had been unseen.

كَشَفْنَا

كَشَفْنَا — to expose and reveal

From كَشَفَ, it signifies the lifting and removal of the covering of heedlessness.

حَدِيدٌ

حَدِيدٌ — sharp, perfectly clear sight

Linked to الحَدّ — separation between things so they do not mix; the sight becomes able to clearly distinguish what is real and what is not.

Distinction

From mixing to clarity

Where there had been mixing and confusion, the sight on that Day is impenetrably clear — resistant to confusion and perfectly distinguishing.

Linguistic insights

كَشَفْنَا from كَشَفَ
Means “to expose and to reveal”. Here it means that the veil or covering of heedlessness (Ghaflah) will be lifted and removed to reveal the true reality that the person had been completely heedless about.
حَدِيدٌ — الحَدّ
الحَدّ is the separation between two things so that one does not mix with the other. Previous Aayaat in this Surah describe how they were in a state of mixing and confusing things together but on this day their sight will be able to clearly distinguish between what is real and what is not. حَدِيدٌ is also used to describe something that is impenetrable or resistant to attack. This meaning adds to the perfection and clarity of eyesight on that day.

Visual representation

Heedlessness (Ghaflah)

A state marked by covering and confusion — things mix and are not clearly distinguished.

Unveiled, sharp sight (حَدِيدٌ)

The covering is removed; sight becomes impenetrably clear, separating and discerning what is real from what is not.
