Addressing doubts and arguments
This statement is a direct response to the doubts, questioning, and arguments that were presented.
قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنقُصُ الْأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَابٌ حَفِيظٌ
“We already know what the earth takes from them (and continues to take from them). And we have a Kitab Hafeezh”.
This statement is a direct response to the doubts, questioning, and arguments that were presented.
The wording informs that there is precise knowledge of what exactly happens to human bodies after their death as the earth takes from them.
“We already know what the earth takes from them.”تَنقُصُ is in the Mudaari’ (present/future) form, indicating an ongoing and continuing process in the present and future.
A visual cue for “continues to take”.نَقَصَ means “to deduct or subtract”. The sense here is reduction, not total removal.
It can also be understood as a message to the disbelievers of Makkah that the earth—once spacious for their movement and trade—would become narrow and constrained for them after a small number of years.
The reduction does not imply annihilation.
حَفِيظٌ implies both حَافِظ (guarding) and مَحْفُوظ (guarded): a record that watches over and cannot be tampered with.
It guards all information related to human conditions, recording statements and deeds. Bodies may decay; the deed-record is secured and safeguarded.
وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ
“And everything We have enumerated in a clear record.”What the earth reduces is fully known; what you do is fully preserved.
Mudaari’ indicates present and future: an ongoing action.
نَقَصَ = to deduct/subtract, not to erase.
كِتَابٌ حَفِيظٌ = a record that is both guarding and guarded.
Your body will decay, but your deeds and record are secured and safeguarded.
