Related to being drowned, covered, or drenched. Used with water for a flood or deluge that covers and submerges, or with the night to indicate a complete covering of darkness.
It can refer to someone being completely covered or immersed by something such as mud, or a smell that has saturated a person or their clothing. It can imply being shielded, like a child immersed in innocence.
From سَهْو (Sahw): distractedness, inattentiveness, and absent-mindedness. It can also imply being care-free and at ease.
Core insight
The people are not just habitually making things up (الْخَرَّاصُونَ — “Al‑Kharraasoon”), but are drowning in distraction themselves. Distraction, by definition, implies being taken away from something more important.
Their opposition to the occurrence of resurrection and the Day of Judgement is not due to solid opposing beliefs, but because they are addicted to and immersed in distraction and do not want to get out of their comfort zone — a description of people who do not want to face reality.

Depth and consequence
Being immersed in سَهْو (Sahw) makes people completely heedless and inattentive of the realities around them. When someone is immersed in distraction, they are not thinking. The greater the immersion, the harder it is to escape from it.
