Language point
يُفْتَنُونَ (Yuftanoona) comes from فَتَنَ – فِتْنَة (Fatana – Fitnah).
This word has two main meanings.
Original sense: refining in fire
فِتْنَة originally referred to the process of placing metal like gold or silver into fire to:
- test,
- purify,
- or separate its components.
Just like metals are burned to see how true they are.
Revealed by the fire: what is within
“You will be burnt to be shown how much truth you had inside these ideas of yours, how authentic your views of life in the world were, or how attached the distractions you immersed yourself in were to the truth and reality.”
Ideas — how much truth you had inside them.
Views — how authentic your views of life in the world were.
Distractions — how attached they were to the truth and reality.
Consequence
They will be punished and burnt just like gold is tested by fire.
