A preserved sign
What occurred in relation to the people of Lut (as) has been left as a sign—serving as a lesson and warning for those who fear the painful punishment.
وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَا آيَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ الْعَذَابَ الْأَلِيمَ This sign is meaningful to hearts that fear the painful punishment.
What occurred in relation to the people of Lut (as) has been left as a sign—serving as a lesson and warning for those who fear the painful punishment.
The threats and punishments of previous nations are not only about those specific peoples; they are warnings and lessons for those who come after.
“We left a sign in the town”—what befell it in terms of destruction implies ruins that can be looked upon in later times.
“We left a sign in the story of the nation of Lut”—the narrative itself stands as a sign, lesson, and warning.
Punishments of previous nations are warnings and lessons intended also for later generations.
Punishment is not restricted to nations in this life; individuals have also been targeted by divine punishment.
Those who fear the painful punishment are the ones who truly take heed of the sign left behind.
As seen in respect to the story of Qarun:
“So, We caused the earth to swallow him and his home”.
• Recognize that the sign may be encountered in two ways: in the town’s fate (ruins/aftermath) and in the preserved story.
• Treat both as living lessons and warnings intended for those who fear the painful punishment.
• Understand that accountability applies across times and can reach both nations and individuals.
