Ayah 51:42

مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَيْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَالرَّمِيمِ

Adh-Dhāriyāt 51:42

“It didn’t leave anything of what it came upon except that it made it like disintegrated ruins”.

Allah describes the event in the present tense (مَا تَذَرُ) although it occurred long ago. This is اِسْتِحْضَار (Istihdaar): mentally evoking a past scene so it unfolds before the listener’s eyes—as if happening now.

تَذَرُ — from وَذَرَ (Wadhara)

وَذَرَ
Used about meat cut into small boneless pieces; also the cuttings left by a tailor. It relates to small, insignificant remnants from something originally larger.
In this āyah, تَذَرُ implies nothing of value was spared: the wind left no meaningful remainder of whatever it passed over.

الرَّمِيم — from رَمَّ (Ramma)

رَمَّ
Means to decay and rot; رَميم describes dried, withered, crumbled organic matter (grass, plants, bones) disintegrated over time.
رَمَّ also means “to repair,” suggesting a root idea of “returning to a state,” whether by decay or restoration. رَميم is what needs repair; رَمّ is the act of repairing.
أَرَمَّ conveys becoming mute; تَرَمُّم is trying yet unable to speak—stunned silence.

As-Suddiy interpreted رَميم as everything reduced to dirt (تُراب – Turaab).

‘Ād: strength, arrogance, and the humbling wind

Surah Al-Fajr — their unmatched might

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ (6) إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ (7) الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ (Al-Fajr: 6-8)

‘Ād possessed lofty pillars and prowess in building. Yet they stood no chance against الرِّيحَ الْعَقِيمَ — “the wind that destroys all benefit”—their pride and power crumbled into ruins, rubble, and dust.

فَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَقَالُوا مَنْ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً ۖ أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ الَّذِي خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً ۖ وَكَانُوا بِآيَاتِنَا يَجْحَدُونَ * فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِي أَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ لِّنُذِيقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْيِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا ۖ وَلَعَذَابَ الْآخِرَةِ أَخْزَىٰ ۖ وَهُمْ لَا يُنصَرُونَ (Fussilat: 15)

They were arrogant, claiming none was stronger. Allah, who created them, is greater in strength. A screaming wind during days of misfortune made them taste humiliation in this life; the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
