فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مِن قِيَامٍ — “not able to stand”
- Literal: so stunned and paralysed that they were unable to stand.
- Figurative: unable to stand in the face of it and defend themselves from it.
“So, they were not able to stand, nor could they defend themselves”.
The verse portrays utter paralysis and helplessness in the face of Allah’s punishment: unable even to stand; utterly incapable of helping or retaliating.
مُنتَصِرِينَ here means being able to help oneself. It draws from the verb form اِنْتَصَرَ (to have the ability to retaliate against someone).
Its root نُصْرَة implies help and assistance against an enemy, or for something major—encompassing self-help and standing up for oneself through retaliation.
وَلَمَنِ انتَصَرَ بَعْدَ ظُلْمِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَا عَلَيْهِم مِّن سَبِيلٍ
“And whoever stands up for himself after having been wronged, those have not upon them any cause [for blame]”
Ash-Shura: 41فَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ
“So, give us victory (Nasr or Nusrah) over the disbelieving people”
Al-Baqarah: 286وَلَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اللَّهُ بِبَدْرٍ
“And Allah had already given you Nasr (support) at [the battle of] Badr”.
They were a powerful nation whom others would fear retaliation from; yet when Allah’s punishment took hold of them, they were not even able to stand—let alone help themselves or retaliate.
فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا
وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَاهَا
“So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and made it equal [i.e., encompassing them all equally]. (14) And He does not fear its consequence”
Ash-Sham 14-15This reiterates that they had no power to help themselves or retaliate.
51:45 encapsulates two layers of incapacity: the loss of basic ability to stand (قِيَامٍ) and the total absence of retaliatory power (مُنتَصِرِينَ)—a complete nullification of strength before Allah’s decree.
