People’s views are affected and changed by their trends and environments—moving places or changes within the same society shift values over time. Weak and false ideas are inherently subject to change, like waves, dunes, or branching pathways.
Core message
Turning away becomes a pattern: the one already turned away keeps being turned away—from the signs before them and even from their own ideas.
Trends and environments
Views shift with prevailing environments. Over time—whether relocating to different societies or living through change in the same one—ideas adapt to the dominant climate. This fluidity characterizes weak and false ideas, ever changing like waves, shifting dunes, or diverging paths.
- These shifting trends stand in contrast to what was described as certain regarding recompense and the Day of Judgement being “Saadiq” and “Waaqi’”, implying the opposite of constant change.
Linguistic: the range of إِفْك (Ifk)
أَفِكَ / إِفْك carries the idea “to turn away” something from its direction (cf. صَرَفَ — “Sarafa”). From this, it also denotes “to lie or slander”: turning away from the facts is إِفْك.
- الْمُؤْتَفِكَاتِ describes towns overturned (the towns of لُوط), evoking what keeps being turned around like earth by winds.
- أَرْضٌ مَأْفُوكَة: land turned away from—deprived of rain, mercy, or divine favour.
- اِئْتَفَكَتِ البَلْدَة: the town overturned and destroyed, or its moral order overturned and collapsed.
The term also carries the meaning of weakness of mind and opinion. Two central ideas: turning away from truth and weakness of mind and opinion.
يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَ captures how one already turned away keeps being turned away—diverted again and again.
Human nature (Fitrah) and turning away
Allah has pre‑programmed humans with an inclination towards Himself (the Ruh). We naturally look for purpose, which requires concentrating, thinking, and searching for truth without constant distraction.
The contemporary world witnesses many changes and instability in civilizational or cultural aspects, moving increasingly towards chaos and lack of purpose.
The one who has been turned away from his Fitrah and original purpose will keep on being turned away—turning from the reality of the afterlife after turning from the signs, and even turning away from their own ideas, leading to continual shifts like sands in the wind.
Allah created the human to ponder the Aayaat (signs) and find purpose behind them, enabling the human to set upon the right path.
Link to the oath: وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْحُبُكِ
Imagine a beautifully woven blanket stitched to perfection. We admire the end product but forget the single thread. “By the sky capable of producing beautiful tapestry” includes sunrise, sunset, clouds, and stars. People see this beauty and are amazed, yet do not ask: where did this thread begin? How can one see this and not think of the crafter who created it?
The created system is tightly and precisely bound—cohesive and complete. This stands as a witness while people go towards ideas so loose that they easily shift and change, increasing in deviation.
Shifting sands, waves, and pathways
Ideas and opinions sway like waves—restless and ever-changing.
Trends drift like dunes in the wind, reshaping what is held to be true.
New pathways are constantly presented, multiplying divergence.
In contrast, what was promised regarding recompense and the Day of Judgement is described as certain—terms that imply the opposite of shifting, adapting, and changing.
