Wail: severe ruin Denial: inner & outer “On that Day”

وَيْل (Wail): scope and force

What “Wail” conveys

Terrifying place in hellfire

Interpreted as a terrifying place in hellfire that even hell is afraid of.

Utter ruin and worst punishment

Used to describe the worst kind of punishment or curse — the most terrible affliction that ruins a person.

How it functions here

In this āyah, it can be a supplication against them or a statement of fact that, on that day, they will experience the real “Wail”.

As a supplication against the deniers

An invocation of severe ruin upon those who deny.

As a statement of fact “on that day”

A declaration that they will encounter the true “Wail”.

المُكَذِّبِينَ (Al-Mukadh’dhibeen): who are “the deniers”?

Form and roots

المُكَذِّبِينَ — جمع اسم فاعل من: كَذَّبَ — تَكْذِيب
كَذَّبَ verb: to accuse of lying
تَكْذِيب verbal noun: declaring as false
المُكَذِّبِينَ plural active participle: the deniers
Meaning spectrum

To accuse someone of lying; to declare a claim as false; to reject a statement as untrue.

Two dimensions

Internal: holding it to be false. External: calling it a lie and trying to show others it is false.

Subject of their takdheeb

The Prophet ﷺ and the Qur’an, including its stories.

Three categories of “the deniers”

  1. Those who consider it to be a lie themselves and endorse that view among other people.
  2. Those who consider it a lie but do not endorse it to others.
  3. Those who consider it to be true but endorse it as a lie amongst others.

“On that day” — the encounter with Wail

A statement of certainty: on that day, they will experience the real “Wail”.

Key insights distilled

Intensity of warning

“Wail” signals the worst kind of punishment or curse — a devastating ruin.

It has also been interpreted as a terrifying place in hellfire.

Nature of denial (takdheeb)

Denial spans the heart and the tongue: internally deeming the truth a lie, and outwardly calling it false and attempting to make others see it as false.

Here, the target of this denial is the Prophet ﷺ and the Qur’an, including its stories.
