QURANHIVE

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ

“Or, are they saying that he is a Shaa’ir (poet) for whom we can wait a misfortune of time”.

Accusation: poet Waiting for misfortune Time, uncertainty, death

Context and thrust of the accusation

Third accusation in a propaganda campaign

- Recognises he is not a كاهن (Kaahin, fortune-teller) nor مجنون (Majnoon, insane). His speech and actions don’t match those profiles.

- Next tactic: accuse him of being “really good with words” — a poet — to undermine the source and weight of his message.

Not Kaahin Not Majnoon Accused: Poet

Language points and insights

نَّتَرَبَّصُ (Natarabbasu)

تَرَبَّصَ – تَرَبُّص

to wait or watch; to lie in wait for an opportunity.

- Conveys watchfulness and calculated delay — observing if/when something befalls.

رَيْبَ (Raib)

doubt, disturbance, ominous uncertainty; can also mean calamity/misfortune.

- In Qur’anic usage: not mere intellectual doubt, but an unsettling, ominous unease.

- Also used for calamity or unexpected harm.

Expression: رَيْبُ الدَّهْر (Raibu-d-Dahr) — misgivings of time; ominous turns of fate; unsettling uncertainties of existence.

الْمَنُونِ (Al-Manoon)

death; the trials and ups and downs of life that, over time, lead to one’s demise.

- From a root relating to cutting off — as in a cut rope.

Reference: حَبْل مَنِين (Habl Maneen) — a rope that is cut; death “cuts” life short.

Composite sense of the phrase

نَّتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ

“Let’s wait for some downturn in his fortune to afflict him.”

Implications

- Wait for time to “deal with him,” anticipating a fall in status as happens with poets.

- When he is gone, they expect his “poetry” to die with him and their troubles to end.

The comparison to poets

- Poets can rise high and then fall, even be forgotten. They frame him within that pattern, expecting this “phase” to pass.

Threads woven through the ayah

Calculated waiting

- تَرَبُّص signals a watchful, opportunistic delay.

Ominous uncertainty

- رَيْب carries existential unease and even misfortune.

Mortality and ending

- الْمَنُون evokes death and the life-cuts of time.

Focused recap

What the accusation signals

- It tacitly concedes he is neither a fortune‑teller nor insane.

- It reframes his message as mere poetic talent to diminish its authority.

What they are waiting for

- A downturn or misfortune that ends his influence — expecting time to close his “chapter” like other poets.
