Does their reason really tell them to do this, or are they simply insolent people?
“Are these accusations of the Messenger ﷺ being a Kaahin (soothsayer), Majnoon (madman) and now Shaa’ir (poet) really the best that your seasoned intellects can come up with?!”
A probing contrast: seasoned intellects versus a people characterized by overstepping bounds.
أَحْلَامُ — Hilm and ‘Uqool (intellects)
أَحْلَامُ (Ahlaam) is the plural of حِلْم (Hilm), here intended with the meaning of عُقُول (‘Uqool) “intellects”.
Mildness, gentleness, patience, and composure.
Insightfulness, understanding, discernment, intelligence, and reason.
Quraish claimed mature, composed judgmentحَلِيم (Haleem): one who deals with people gently and patiently
Context: why Quraish were seen as discerning
They were regarded as people of Hilm and discernment because people from across the world would come to them and mingle with them. Through travel, seeing varied regions, and associating with diverse manners, intellect becomes refined and complete.
“Quraish were seen to be people of Hilm and discernment... the intellect becomes complete, for it is refined by travel, by seeing different lands and varied regions, and by associating with people of diverse mannerisms.” — Al-Alousiy, reporting Al-Jahiz
Measured reason over rash claims
Allah invokes a term implying composed intelligence to expose the lack of wisdom in their charges.
“That there is the indication that everything that does not accord with the mind should not be said.” — Ibn ‘Ashour
In simple terms: “Think before you speak.”
Their accusations contradict each other
If he were Majnoon (insane), how could he be a Kaahin (soothsayer who informs about the unseen)?
If he were Majnoon or a Kaahin, how could he be a Shaa’ir (poet) with the purest tongue and language?
طَغَى / طَاغُونَ — overstepping bounds
طَغَى (Taghaa): exceeding proper bounds like water overflowing riverbanks; also, tyrannical behavior—asserting dominance as though above law.
“Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried your ancestors in the sailing ship” (11).
Do not accept to follow othersBelieve in unrestricted dominance over othersReject limits and curtailment
What the ayah exposes
Their denial is not truly rooted in the labels they cast—soothsayer, madman, or poet. Rather, they are a قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ: a people characterized by transgressing bounds, unwilling to be limited or relinquish dominance.
Composed intelligence
Hilm calls for patient, gentle, non-agitated reasoning before speech.
Reality over rhetoric
Claims that do not accord with sound mind should not be uttered.
Unmasking the motive
The façade of accusations hides the deeper driver: transgression and refusal of limits.
