Ayah 52:34 — Challenge of Truthfulness

فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِّثْلِهِ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ

“Then let them produce a speech like it, if they were being truthful”.

Challenge Truthfulness (Ṣidq) Strength & Integrity
Overview
Core sense of the ayah

A direct, public challenge

  • If these accusations have some basis and you believe that the Messenger ﷺ is a poet or has just made the Qur’an up—and you are truthful and sincere in your claims—then just bring something like it.

  • You have the best poets at your disposal; you have future and past tellers—so gather them together and produce something like the Qur’an.

  • Do this so that the people will stop listening to it—if you are indeed truthful.

Language points and insights
Root and form

صَادِقِينَ (Saadiqeen) from صِدْق (Sidq)

“Sidq” means truthfulness; Saadiq refers to one who is truthful and has integrity.

Solidity and straightness

Secondary nuance: صَدْق (Sadq)

Used to describe a spear or sword that is solid, straight, and dependable—“true” to its purpose, form, and function.

Unfaltering quality

Fabric described as صِدْق / صَدْق

Clothing is described as such if it is solid and of good, strong quality.

True sight

عَيْن صَادِقَة (Saadiqah)

An eye described this way “sees truly”—not just sharply, but with integrity, witnessing without bias or distortion.

Beyond bluster

رَجُلٌ صَدْقٌ (Rajul Sadq)

Someone who is true and sincere in his encounter with an opponent—unflinching, not mere talk and bluster.

Courage embodied

حَمْلَة صَادِقَة (Hamlah Saadiqah)

A brave charge that does not falter and is not based on pretence.

Nuance of support

يُصَدِّقُنِي (Yusaddiquniy)

In the following Aayah in Surah Al-Qasas:

“And my brother Aaron is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me. Indeed, I fear that they will deny me” (34) Here, يُصَدِّقُنِي implies giving strength.
Inference in context

If they were being truthful

In light of these meanings, the Aayah can also infer:

  • “Then let them produce a speech like it, if they are so strong in what they believe.”

  • “…or if they are so solid in the strength of their ideas.”

  • “…or if they are brave enough to do that.”

A challenge to make the Qur’an irrelevant—if they can.
Closing note

Back up the claims

The Qur’an is challenging them to back up the claims and accusations they made against the Prophet ﷺ and the Qur’an.
