Irresistible Decree Surah 52 • Ayah 8

مَّا لَهُ مِن دَافِعٍ

“There is no repeller of it”.

Language points and insights
Root and form

دَفَعَ dafaʿa — “to push”; used to carry the meaning of “to repel, push or drive away or to the side, or to prevent and defend against something”.

Derived noun: دَافِعٍ daafi’.

No repeller — scope of meaning

The Aayah is saying that there is no way for it to be repelled, averted or diverted, or there is nothing that can prevent it, defend against it or stand in the way of its occurrence.

Inevitability

Nothing can stand in the way of its occurrence — there is no preventing or defending against it.

Contextual clarification and mindset
Clarifying real vulnerability

The Prophet (pbuh) like Prophets that came before him would appear to be in a position of weakness where he is met by abuse and hostilities from a seemingly powerful force without the ability to retaliate, however, by this, Allah is clarifying that it is not the Prophet ﷺ who has a target on his back and is in a position of weakness, but rather it is you (O leaders of Quraish) who have a target on your back from which there is no escape and it is you who are truly in the position of weakness.

When believers seem weak

This can be applied whenever believers are seen to be in a position of weakness before their enemies. If they hold fast to Islam and its mission, they are actually in a position of strength whilst those who appear powerful are in the position of weakness.

Narration connected to these Aayaat
The recitation that moved a heart

Recorded by Al-Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal; related by Jubair bin Muṭ‘im (may Allah be pleased with him).

“By the Mount; (1) And by the Book that is written. (2) In parchment unrolled. (3) And by the Bait-ul-Ma'moor); (4) And by the roof raised high (5) And by the sea kept filled (6) Verily, the punishment of your Lord will surely come to pass (7) There is none that can repel it”.

He said: I came to Al-Madinah to speak with the Prophet ﷺ regarding the captives of Badr. I was taken to him while he was leading his companions in the Maghrib prayer, and I heard him reciting [the verses above]. It was as if my heart was split apart. So, I embraced Islam out of fear of the punishment descending, and I did not think that I would leave where I was before the punishment would descend upon me.

Essence distilled
No defense can avert it

Repelling, averting, diverting, preventing, or defending against it is impossible.

True strength vs. appearance

Those who appear powerful may be in real weakness; holding fast to Islam places believers in strength.

A target with no escape

Leaders of Quraish are the ones truly targeted; not the Prophet ﷺ.
