Surah An-Najm — Ayah 4

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ

“It is not except Wahy (revelation) that has been revealed”.

Essence of the statement

⟢

Nothing other than revelation

The phrase “إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا” functions as an emphatic negation: it excludes every possibility except revelation.

↧

Ongoing descent at the right moments

“يُوحَىٰ” adds that revelation is being delivered at the most fitting times and continues to come down.

✹

Grandness in “وَحْيٌ”

The tanwīn on وَحْيٌ can signal grandeur in this structure — conveying a remarkable revelation.

Climactic emphasis: After prior negations with مَا, this ayah shifts to إِن (for negation) to drive the point home with stronger force.

Mode of transmission: concealed communication

Hidden speech

Revelation is communicated to the Prophet ﷺ such that others present do not hear it; then he recites.

Private, inward delivery

It implies a secret or concealed communication reaching the Messenger ﷺ.

As it is being recited

What is being listened to of Surah An‑Najm here is nothing but revelation coming down as we speak.

This presents revelation as a discreet, precise delivery — not a public, audible discourse to those around.

Linguistic landscape of وَحْي and أَوْحَى

Core sense

“Wahy” is typically translated as inspiration or revelation.

Revelation Inspiration

Written usage

It can mean “written” (مَكْتُوب), as in: وَحْيٌ فِي الحَجَر — “written in stone”.

Faint sound

Its root appears in وَحاة (a barely audible sound), used for distant thunder or faint birdsong.

Secret speech

وَحَى إِلَيْه / أَوْحَى إِلَيْهِ: to speak in a concealed way, hidden from others.

Gesture and inward prompting

الإِيْحاء from أَوْحَى: placing a meaning in the heart covertly; indirect communication by gesture or whisper.

فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَيْهِمْ أَن سَبِّحُوا بُكْرَةً وَعَشِيًّا — signalled to them to glorify Allah morning and evening (Maryam:11).

Transformation

أَوْحَى الإِنْسان: used to indicate a major change in circumstances (e.g., becoming like a king after poverty).

Rhetorical architecture in the ayah

“إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا” — total exclusion

Not anything at all except revelation. The structure disallows alternative explanations.

إِن vs مَا

After prior negations with مَا, the switch to إِن intensifies the negation, forming a climax to the preceding statements.

إِطْنَاب — deliberate amplification

Additional wording heightens emphasis: rather than merely “it is revelation,” it becomes “nothing at all but revelation.”

“وَحْيٌ” + “يُوحَىٰ”

Reiterating the act of being revealed underscores the continual, timely descent.

Tanwīn of grandeur

The tanwīn on وَحْيٌ lends a sense of remarkable magnitude within this construction.

Immediate context

This functions as the apex of the argument that the recitation is divinely sourced, unfolding at its due moments.

What this categorically excludes

Not from a human source

Contemplation leads to the conclusion that it cannot be human‑originated.

Not made up

It is not an invention or fabrication.

Not poetry

It does not belong to poetic discourse or any other human genre.

Word focus

وَحْيٌ

Conveys revelation of remarkable weight; tanwīn here signals grandeur.

يُوحَىٰ

Being revealed — indicating ongoing, timely descent.

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا

A structure of total restriction: nothing but this.
