QURANHIVE
Surah An-Najm — Ayah 40

And that his effort will (soon) be seen or shown

وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ

“And that his effort will (soon) be seen or shown”

Passive: يُرَى (Yurā) “to be seen” (from يَرَى Yaraa) “to be shown” (from أَرَى Araa)
Linguistic depth

Dual reading embedded in the passive

يُرَى (Yurā) is the passive drawn from both يَرَى (Yaraa, “to see”) and أَرَى (Araa, “to show”).

  • “To be seen”: his effort will be before him to witness.
  • “To be shown”: his effort will be displayed to others as well.
Effort and its visibility

Unseen in the world — not lost

Efforts may go unnoticed in this life, yet believers are unconcerned by worldly recognition.

Allah informs that efforts will indeed be seen or shown on the Day of Judgement. Effort is not wasted due to lack of worldly visibility.

Accountability is personal

Principle of accountability Individual responsibility

وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ

Each person will only be asked about his own efforts.

Disease of helplessness

False helplessness vs. true السَّعْي (As‑Sa’y)

Some claim incapacity to engage in the correct السَّعْي (As‑Sa’y), citing emotional, verbal or psychological pressures.

Al‑Ahzab: 67 Excuse presented

وَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّا أَطَعْنَا سَادَتَنَا وَكُبَرَاءَنَا فَأَضَلُّونَا السَّبِيلَا

And they will say: “Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our chiefs and our nobles (or great men), and they led us astray from the [right] way (Al-Ahzab: 67).

Blame is laid on leaders and personalities as though one had no choice. Such an excuse is not accepted.

Correction

The verses establish: responsibility rests with one’s own effort; each person is questioned regarding his own sa’y.

The light of effort on the path
At‑Tahrim: 8 Procession towards Jannah

نُورُهُمْ يَسْعَىٰ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا

Their light will proceed before them and on their right; they will say, "Our Lord, perfect for us our light … (At-Tahrim: 8).

Meaning of the two lights

  • The light between their hands represents the light of Iman.
  • The light on the right represents the efforts that were made.
  • This light is needed to reach Paradise, and so they say: “Our Lord, allow our light to be completed”.
Mindset and action

Commit to As‑Sa’y

Move forward and take charge towards fulfilling goals, rather than yielding to pressures.

Seek the Hereafter’s sight

Orientation is towards the Day when efforts are seen or shown—not towards worldly applause.

Own your accountability

Each person is responsible for his own effort; excuses tied to others will not stand.

Key takeaways
  • يُرَى encapsulates both “to be seen” and “to be shown”.
  • Efforts unnoticed in this life are not lost; they manifest on the Day of Judgement.
  • Claims of helplessness via social or psychological pressures are invalid as excuses.
  • Accountability is individual: a person will only be asked about his own efforts.
  • On the path to Jannah, light ahead relates to Iman; light on the right relates to one’s efforts.
