Heart: inner states
The ordering points to the primacy of the heart: its life and death define our nearness to Allah more than bodily conditions.
وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَا Exclusive divine control: life and death belong to Him alone.
It can be observed that Allah mentioned laughter and crying first and death and life second. NAK draws from this that it is as if the emotional states in which Allah intervenes are a greater matter than life and death itself.
Signals Allah’s direct role in our inner, emotional states.
Placed after, highlighting the precedence of the inner over the outer.
Laughter and crying are connected to the life and death of the heart, which is more important than the life and death of the body. Our connection to Allah is much more connected to our heart than to our body.
The ordering points to the primacy of the heart: its life and death define our nearness to Allah more than bodily conditions.
Bodily life and death matter, yet they are secondary to the spiritual condition of the heart.
This priority of the heart aligns with what will matter most before Allah:
يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children (88) But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart (Ash-Shu’ara: 88-89).
Ash-Shu’ara: 88–89
He alone causes death and life — ultimate control lies with Allah.
The passage’s order (laughter/crying → death/life) highlights the weight of our inner states.
On the Day of Judgement, what truly benefits is coming to Allah with a sound heart.
