QURANHIVE

Ayah 53:58

لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ

“It has no alleviator or discloser besides Allah”.

A declaration of exclusivity: regarding the impending Day (al-Āzifah), no person or entity can remove it or disclose its time—this belongs to Allah alone.

Removal/Alleviation (كَشْف بمعنى الإزالة)
Disclosure/Revelation (كَشْف بمعنى الإظهار)

The fronting of “من دون الله” centers the focus on Allah—the only One who can expose or avert it.

Core Axes of Meaning

Alleviation axis

Nothing can make the Day go away

كَاشِفَةٌ refers to a person/entity capable of making كَشْف (removal). In this reading, there is no one that can alleviate or avert the Day (الْآزِفَةُ).

Al-Ālūsī: feminine aligns with implied نَفْس
Az-Zamakhsharī: no one can delay it
Disclosure axis

No one can reveal its time

There is no نَفْس that can disclose and make clear the timing of its occurrence—it is from the most hidden matters of the unseen. الكَشْف here is to make visible and clarify.

Paralleled by: لَا يُجَلِّيهَا لِوَقْتِهَا إِلَّا هُو (Al-A‘rāf: 187)

And in the Ḥadīth of Jibrīl: “The one being asked has no more knowledge about it than the one asking.”

At-Ṭabarī & Az-Zajjāj

Form and Nuance of “كَاشِفَةٌ”

Feminine ending linked to implied نَفْس

كَاشِفَةٌ is feminine because it refers to the omitted but understood نَفْس (a person), which is grammatically feminine.

Possible emphatic pattern (مبالغة)

The تاء مربوطة may serve as an emphatic ending (مثل: عَلَّامَة), not requiring a feminine referent—intensifying the sense of “discloser/alleviator.”

الكَشْف — The Lexical Field

Exposure

Receding hair exposing the head.

Figurative

Crookedness in a horse’s tailbone.

Removal

كَشَفَ a garment: he took it off, revealing what is beneath.

Revelation

أَكْشَفَ: he laughed such that his gums were revealed.

Central sense

The removal of that which covers a surface, so that what lies beneath becomes visible.

Both “alleviation” (removing an event) and “disclosure” (making its time visible) are natural extensions of this core meaning.

Syntax that Centers Allah

The sentence advances “من دون الله” before “كَاشِفَةٌ,” against the neutral order, to concentrate attention on Allah as the sole agent.

مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌ
Fronting for exclusivity and focus

Implication: stop seeking answers elsewhere; attend to what Allah states—disclosure and alleviation of the Event are exclusively His.

Scholarly Notes

Al-Ālūsī

Reads كَاشِفَةٌ as tied to an implied نَفْس capable of removal; no one can make the Day go away or save from its occurrence.

Az-Zamakhsharī

“It does not have now any alleviating person or entity that can delay it.” No one has the capability to delay the Day.

At-Ṭabarī & Az-Zajjāj

The meaning is that no نَفْس can disclose and make clear the time of its occurrence; الكَشْف is to make something clear and disclose it.
