From heedlessness to devoted servitude

The Aayah shifts the entire posture of life—from arrogance to prostration, from a momentary act to a lifelong state.

Immediate humility

This is in response for their arrogance and heedlessness and a command to humble themselves by lowering their heads to the ground and being slaves to Allah in worship. It is like Allah is saying: “Let your arrogance go, give up your pride and fall in Sajdah (prostration) to Me”.

Heedless / Arrogant Humble / Submissive

Worship as a continuous state

“And worship or be a slave” is the permanent and constant state that you should be in following your prostration. Here you are now laughing and in a constant state of being Saamidoon (arrogant and heedless). Instead of that, you need to prostrate to Me now and worship me in a constant and continuous manner.

سامِد Saamid عَبْد ‘Abd

Sajdah vs ‘Ibadah

The prostration (Sajdah) relates directly to the act of worship whilst ‘Ibadah (worship) encompasses the whole life. This Aayah therefore calls not just for a transformation and change in terms of how the people worship but also how they live the entirety of their lives in every aspect of human life.

Live the entire life in ‘Ibadah

  • Move from a momentary act (Sajdah) to a continuous identity (‘Ibadah).
  • Replace the state of being سامِد with being an عَبْد.
  • Let the Aayah transform how you worship and how you live.

How the section culminates in Sajdah

A step-by-step flow toward the command to prostrate and worship.

1) The final end (Day of Judgement) is coming down (about to descend) and getting closer (57)
2) No one can expose it/ make it go away (58).
3) You laugh (60a)
4) And you don’t cry (60b)
6) Yet you puff your chests, sing and act carefree (or heedless (61).
7) So, prostrate to Allah and worship (62).

Connections:

  • The first and last are connected in terms of both including the meaning of coming down and getting closer, in the case where the Day of Judgement is coming down and getting closer and when you prostrate you come down and get closer to Allah. As such, before the Day of Judgement comes down, make sure that you come down and get close to Allah.
  • The second and second from last are connected in the case where they are behaving like they can handle anything and can remain in an arrogant state of carelessness and heedlessness, but Allah is saying that nobody can alleviate the coming of the Day of Judgement and make it go away.
