Denial Lowly desires Settling of affairs

Language Points and Insights

وَكَذَّبُوا — Open-ended denial

“And they denied or called a lie.” The statement is left open without specifying what is denied, thus encompassing:

  • Denial of the signs of Allah, the Prophet ﷺ, and the truth of the Message.
  • Lying against what their own eyes and ears witness, and against their minds and hearts.

أَهْوَاءَهُمْ (Ahwaa’) — Lowly inclinations and the fall

أَهْوَاءَ is the plural of هَوًى (Hawa): whims, desires, inner inclinations to what is desired.

Etymology and related forms:

  • The verb هَوَى describes the swooping of a predatory bird; falling or tumbling down, dropping from high.
  • هَوَاء (air/atmosphere): any gap or empty space; metaphorically, a coward is described as if empty inside.
  • هَاوِية (bottomless pit/abyss); Hell was described as هَاوِيَة in Surah Al-Qari’ah: فَأُمُّهُ هَاوِيَةٌ “His refuge will be an abyss” (9).

Semantic insight: love overpowering the heart; “to fall for something low.” When one loves a lowly goal, one is a victim of هَوًى.

“They fall in love with lowly and empty things.” “They follow lowly and empty desires, loves, or whims.”

مُسْتَقِرٌّ (Mustaqirr) — Settled and fixed

Refers to that which sticks, remains fixed, and settles into place (like at the bottom).

  • The verb قَرَّ: to settle in a place.
  • قَرَارِيُونَ (Qaraariyoon): city dwellers (settled) as opposed to nomads.
  • إِقْرَار (Iqraar): “to affirm/acknowledge” — a matter is made to settle by affirmation.

وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ — The inevitable settling

After denial and following desires, they are told: the reality will not change. Every matter finds its place — a final resting point and appointed outcome.

Whether good or evil, truth or falsehood — each reaches its determined conclusion.

Trajectory of the Ayah

وَكَذَّبُوا — Denial

Open-ended rejection: of signs, the Prophet ﷺ, and truth — even against their own senses and reason.

وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ — Following lowly desires

A descent into whims: an inner fall in love with what is low and empty.

وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّ — Settling of all affairs

An appointed conclusion for every matter: the outcome is determined and will be reached.

Included Meanings in Context

Triumph of truth; vanquishing of falsehood

Matters settle upon the Sunnah of truth being affirmed and falsehood being vanquished.

This is a threat to the deniers and a comfort to the Prophet ﷺ — their denial does not alter the final outcome.

Not a passing phase

In response to سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ (“a magic that will pass by”): it is not transient; it is a matter that will settle and remain.

A timed state of affairs

The present hardship of the Muslims and the apparent upper hand of Quraysh are for an appointed time — the affair will be settled as per Allah’s plan.
