Far-reaching Wisdom

A far-reaching Hikmah (wisdom). But the warnings did not bring benefit (or what then will the Nudhur benefit).

Structure and grammatical insight (Badal)

Connected by substitution (بدل)

The verse ties to the previous one through grammatical substitution (Badal), completing its meaning.

  • Option 1: Maintain “has already come to them” and replace the rest: حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ has come to them — referring to the Qur’an itself.
  • Option 2: Maintain all except مُزْدَجَرٌ “great and sufficient deterrent,” replacing it with حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ — meaning what has come of historical news contains far‑reaching wisdom.

Combined sense: Deterring lessons of history presented in the Qur’an were part of something greater — a far‑reaching wisdom.

Wisdom vs Knowledge

Direction, not mere information

  • Wisdom is knowledge coherently tied together for a higher purpose.
  • The Qur’an is not an encyclopedia of all matters; it gives what other sciences cannot: direction and practical guidance for salvation and success.
Hikmah and Ihkaam: precision and integrity

حِكْمَة (Hikmah) carries إِحْكَام (Ihkaam)

Root ح–ك–م implies doing something precisely and making it firm, like tying or binding tightly and proficiently.

  • True wisdom has precision and structural integrity.
  • Ideas are coherently tied, connected, and solid — built on a solid base.

Hikmah = coherence

Integrity

Precision

Wisdom at its furthest reach

حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ suggests wisdom reaching the furthest wisdom can go.

Human beings will not attain more wisdom than the Qur’an offers.

بَالِغَةٌ, بَلَغَ, and بَلاغَة — “to reach”

بَلَغَ — to reach

  • Like reaching puberty or one’s potential.
  • بَلاغَة is not just beauty; it is speech that reaches the heart, mind, and context.
  • بَلَاغ is a message that reaches its recipient with purpose.

Reaching vs merely hearing

“May it be heard but not reached” — said when hearing disturbing news, i.e., may I be spared its effects.

Insight related to the Jewish and Biblical tradition

Torah vs Hokhma

  • Torah: divine revelation informing what cannot be known independently.
  • Hokhma: originally accessible wisdom through observing nature, behavior, and consequences — not exclusive to prophets or scholars.
  • Over time: shifted to a restricted domain of select “sages” claiming special access to the unseen and visions of the future.

Qur’anic address to both notions

  • Hikmah benefits this life and reaches the next: it is بَالِغَةٌ (far‑reaching).
  • Knowledge pertinent to the Hour is accessible to all — no need for spiritual intermediaries.

With these words, the Qur’an rendered the sages’ gatekeeping irrelevant and freed people from dependence on intermediaries.

When Hikmah reaches us, we rise

Elevation by faith, knowledge, and wisdom

“Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.”

“He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much goodness.”

From received wisdom to meeting the Lord

Hikmah reaches us; by internalizing it, we can now reach Allah.

فَمَا تُغْنِ النُّذُرُ — about the warnings

Two readings of ما

  • Negation: “Far‑reaching wisdom, however the warnings served no benefit.”
  • Interrogative: “Far‑reaching wisdom — but what benefit did the warnings have?”

Aghnā vs Nafa‘a — beyond mere benefit

  • Instead of نَفَعَ (to benefit), the verse uses أَغْنَى — “to make free of need.”
  • غَنِي: one free of need; الغَنِي is among Allah’s Names.
  • The warnings did not set them free and independent because they did not internalize the Hikmah.

Freedom means worshipping Allah alone, not being dependent on intermediaries, nor held hostage by following desires.

When Du‘ā’ is reduced to material gain

When supplication becomes centered on worldly acquisitions, it reflects hearts to whom Hikmah has not truly reached — still shackled, not freed.

Key takeaway

حِكْمَةٌ بَالِغَةٌ — far‑reaching wisdom that frees and elevates

Not only do the Qur’anic accounts deter; they belong to a coherent, precise, far‑reaching wisdom that:

  • Reaches across ages and into the Hereafter.
  • Is accessible without intermediaries.
  • When internalized, frees from false dependencies and raises one toward Allah.
