Surah Al-Qamar 54:8

مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى الدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ الْكَافِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌ

“Rushing to the caller. The disbelievers will say: “This is a difficult day!”

مُهْطِعِينَ عَسِرٌ

Language points and insights

مُهْطِعِينَ (Muh’ti’eena)

  • Derived from the verb أَهْطَعَ (Ahta’a); in reference to a camel: stretching its neck forward and straightening its head by lowering it.
  • Imagery: body aligned with a target to reach it quickly; neck extended, head lowered, eyes wide open and fixed ahead—an action tied to fear.
  • Majority view: مُهْطِعِينَ means to rush towards the caller, combining being transfixed on the target with swift movement.
  • Despite fear, they will be compelled to rush towards the caller.
  • On that Day they will no longer follow their desires as in this life but will be compelled to the opposite.

وَاتَّبَعُوا أَهْوَاءَهُمْ

“And they followed their lowly desires”

عَسِرٌ (‘Asir)

A hyperbolised form (صِيغَةُ المُبَالَغَة – Seegat ul-Mubaalaghah), more intense than عَسِير (‘Aseer – “Difficult”), implying extreme severity for the disbelievers.

فَذَلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ (9) عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ

“That on that Day, will be a difficult day (9) For the disbelievers, it will not be easy” (9–10)

Structure and overview of the first section of Surah Al‑Qamar

Overview

  • The Hour coming near is emphasized before the moon splitting—indicating the greater issue is the nearness of the Hour. The moon is not returned to later, but the Hour is—marking the main subject as the coming of the final Hour.
  • The Surah was first known as Surah اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ (Iqtarabat‑is‑Saa’ah) “The hour has come near”; the naming “Al‑Qamar” became most common later.

1 ↔ 8 — The Final Hour

The section opens and closes with the Final Hour (Day of Judgement), bracketing the discourse.

2 ↔ 7 — Turning away

They “turn away” upon seeing a sign, while later the Prophet is instructed to “turn away” from them—an intentional counterpoint.

3 ↔ 6 — False vs true description of the Qur’an

They label the signs as “a mighty, ongoing and hopefully fading away magic,” whereas the truth is that the Qur’an is “a complete and far‑reaching wisdom”—yet warnings do not benefit them.

4 ↔ 5 — Denial and settling of matters

They deny, follow lowly loves, and every matter will be settled. This is paired with multiple past instances where the matter had already been settled—sufficient as deterrents.

Weaving of Ayaat

The miraculous signs are present not only in individual verses but also in how the verses are precisely structured together.

كِتَابٌ أُحْكِمَتْ آيَاتُهُ

“A Book, the Ayaat of which have been perfectly put together” (Hud: 1)

Key visual takeaways

Rushing to the caller, compelled despite fear

  • Body language of fear: neck extended, head lowered, eyes wide—yet movement is swift and unhesitating.
  • Desire vs compulsion: unlike in worldly life, desire does not lead; compulsion toward the caller does.

A day extremely hard for disbelievers

The intensified form عَسِرٌ underlines severity beyond mere difficulty, aligning with the Surah’s broader pattern of emphatic diction.
