#55:27 Ar-Rahman
QURANHIVE
Ayah focus

وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

“Whilst your Lord’s face, the Owner of Majesty and Honour shall remain”.

ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

Only His Face remains

All created beings pass away; the permanence belongs to your Lord alone.

Majesty independent of our praise

Allah’s glory is intrinsic; not contingent on human glorification.

Majesty (Jalāl): Independent of human glorification

Glory that does not depend on anyone’s recognition or praise.

Meaning and scope of Jalāl

The idea of جَلَالِ is the recognition of magnificence, majesty and glory. All will cease to exist while His majestic reality remains unaffected.

Names and attributes

He is حَمِيد “praised in and of Himself,” not مَحْمُود “praised by another.” The name حَمِيد is often paired with غَنِي — utterly free of need.

وَجْهُ “Face”: A subtle thread across the Surah

Touchpoints that highlight the human face and culminate in the permanence of your Lord’s Face.

The Surah opens with الرَّحْمٰن (loving care and kindness) — first recognized among humans through facial gestures.
Human beings are created and fundamentally recognized by their faces.
فَاكِهَةٌ is not merely fruit but joy-bringing fruit — joy shown on the face.
الرَّيْحَانُ — pleasant fragrance that impacts one’s face.
اللُّؤْلُؤُ (pearls) and الْمَرْجَانُ (coral gems) adorn and draw attention to the face.
Stars and trees make سجود (prostration) — an act done on one’s face.
Culmination: only the Face of your Lord remains — foreshadowing humanity standing to face Him.

What does وَجْهُ imply?

Direction and approach

وَجْهُ can carry the sense of جِهَة — direction. It can imply that the direction to gaining closeness to Allah remains.

Majority understanding

The majority view is that وَجْهُ refers to Allah Himself, employing the Arabic convention of naming the prominent part to refer to the whole.

رَبِّكَ — A direct, honoring address

Singular attachment “your” addresses the Messenger ﷺ directly.

Comfort and assurance

This direct address honors the Prophet ﷺ and subtly assures that, despite opposition, the victory belongs to his side — for it is his Master who remains.

ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

A Qur’anic naming occurring in this Surah and found in Ahadeeth related to supplication.

On calling with this Name

أَلِظُّوا بِيَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ

“Be constant with Yaa Dha-l-Jalaali Wa-l-Ikraam.”

Twofold emphasis

• First: intrinsic Majesty — praised regardless of anyone’s praise.
• Second: honouring others — resurrection, honour, generosity, purification and beautification in the next world.

الْجَلَال — Root connections and core meaning

Ships with elevated sails

The جَلّ of a ship (its sail) connects to “the ships [with sails] elevated in the sea like mountains.”

Contrast with transience

The verb جَلَّ can describe aging — set against فَانٍ “on the verge of perishing” from the previous Ayah. Humans fade; He does not.

Core sense

The core meaning points to “great worth” (عَظِيمُ القَدْر) — greatness and magnificence in all things.

الإِكْرَام — Honour, generosity, purity and beauty

Semantic images within the root and its form.

Silver necklace

الكَرْم: a “silver necklace” worn by Arab women — an image of adornment and honour.

Tilled land

كَرَم: land cleansed of stones and prepared — purity and readiness for growth.

Beneficial rain clouds

مُكَرَّم: clouds carrying beneficial rain — life-giving generosity.

Form and implication

The form أَكْرَمَ denotes being generous to others — honouring, purifying and beautifying others.

Bringing the two together

• Majesty: He is praised in and of Himself; His magnificence stands without any external praise.
• Honour: Though you die here, Allah will resurrect you, honour you, be generous towards you, purify you and make you beautiful in the next world.

Ibn ‘Ashour: الْمُنْعِم عَلى عِبادِه — “The One who grants favours and gifts upon His slaves.”
