QURANHIVE
Ar-Rahman Ayah 55:4
عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ
“He taught him (i.e., the human) Al-Bayaan”.

Al-Bayaan: articulate, eloquent speech; expressive clarity; the capacity to distinguish and convey meaning.

A divine gift that enables humans to separate, compose, and communicate reality and ideas.

Linguistic focus: specification vs. omission

عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ — He taught the Qur’an

Here the recipient is not specified.

عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ — He taught him Al-Bayaan

Here Allah specifies the human as the recipient of Al-Bayaan.

This specification highlights the unique human endowment of clear, meaningful speech.

What Al-Bayaan encompasses

Articulate clarity

Speech that is articulate and eloquent, enabling expressive clarity and the capacity to distinguish and convey meaning.

Root ب-ي-ن

Conveys clarity, separation, distinction.

Humans separate sounds to form words, and words to form sentences—building meaningful speech.

From ideas to knowledge

Speech lets us distinguish between areas of knowledge and ideas, then compile them into a repository for future generations to build upon.

Sets humans apart

Al-Bayaan is a unique human quality that distinguishes us from other creatures.

“This is the ultimate skill of the human being that made him worthy of being given the Qur’an.”

Four opening themes of the Surah

Ar-Rahman

Allah’s most extreme Rahmah.

He taught the Qur’an

Allah’s most extreme Rahmah for us: the Qur’an which He taught.

He created the human

Allah’s most incredible creation.

He taught him Al-Bayaan

The human being’s most incredible ability: speech that clarifies and conveys meaning.

A circular relationship across the four āyāt

Once humans attained Al-Bayaan, its ultimate use was to return to discover Ar-Rahman by learning the Qur’an. Without Al-Bayaan we would not be able to learn the Qur’an; only then do we realise why we were created.

Ar-Rahman Taught Qur’an Human Al-Bayaan

Scholarly perspectives on Al-Bayaan

Ar-Razi

That which removes doubt after doubt—finding clarity from doubt.

Al-Aalousiy

Empowering the human to express himself in speech and to understand the speech of others.

Ad-Dahhak & Qatadah

The ability to distinguish between good (Al-Khair) and evil (Ash-Sharr).

It has been said

Clarity of the Halal and Haram.

Juraij

The ability to distinguish between the path of guidance and the path of misguidance.

Across times

Relates to knowledge of what has been and what comes after—clarifying the realities of those who came first, those who will come later, and the Day of Judgement.

Expression breadth

The ability to speak about what is in our minds, and to speak in many languages.

The Qur’an described as Bayaan

هَٰذَا بَيَانٌ لِّلنَّاسِ وَهُدًى وَمَوْعِظَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

“This [Qur'an] is a Bayaan to [all] the people and a guidance and instruction for those who are conscious of Allah” (138)

This implies the meaning of clarity and clear speech.

A unique human dialogue

Exclusive to humans

No other creature was given Al-Bayaan—the ability of clear speech.

Speaking to Allah

This gift enables us to speak to Allah in a way that is unique to us—encompassing manifestations of His Rahmah.
