Classical attribution

Al-Qurtubi’s report (via Ibn ‘Abbas and Al-Hasan)

Al-Qurtubi in his Tafsir attributes the following description of the springs to Ibn ‘Abbas and Al-Hasan:

  • [The two rivers] flow with pure, refreshing water.
  • One of the two springs being Tasneem, and the other Salsabeel.
  • These springs have been mentioned elsewhere in the Qur’an.
Tasneem and Salsabeel
Pure Refreshing

Pair as rhetorical plurality

It has also been said that the use of the pair, like previously in respect to the two gardens themselves, could be for the purpose of referring to many rather than literally two.

As such, in these gardens they will see abundant springs.

Pair form Suggesting many Abundance

Readings at a glance

Literal dual reading

“Two flowing springs” as two specific springs: one Tasneem and one Salsabeel, flowing with pure, refreshing water.

Rhetorical reading

The dual form may be used to indicate multiplicity: in these gardens there are abundant springs.

Shared essence

Both views emphasize flowing water of purity and refreshment within the gardens.
