Surah Ar‑Rahman — 55:7
QURANHIVE
55:7 — Balance Above and Within

وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ

“And the sky, He raised it and laid down the balancing scale”.

Language points and insights

وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا — “He raised the sky”

What it conveys

  • He made the sky above us. It implies we are on earth below, while there is much more beyond us.
  • The sky we look upon is like a ceiling for the creation of the earth.
  • السَّمَاءَ (As‑Samaa’) in origin refers to everything that is “above” and can include all seven heavens.
  • The sky we can see—even with distant stars—is only the first heaven.

إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ

“Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars (or celestial bodies)” (As‑Saffat: 6)

وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيحَ

“And We have certainly adorned the nearest heaven with lamps (i.e., stars)” (Al‑Mulk: 5)

Knowing there are seven heavens makes a person feel profoundly small in the grand scale; even the nearest sky alone is enough to evoke that humility.

وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ — “And He placed down the scale”

Accountability and standards

Amidst a vast universe, He is bestowing Rahmah while holding humans responsible by placing standards to be upheld.

Justice (‘Adl)

He placed justice on the earth and commanded it to be upheld (understood as His Sharee’ah).

The Qur’an

Interpreted as the scale, as the Qur’an itself has been described as a scale.

Hereafter’s scale

The scale on which actions will be weighed.

Book of deeds

The book containing the deeds of creation—the standard by which deeds are weighed.

Order for life

Al‑Mawdudi: a system for living things to prevent chaos—a balance that brings order.

Creation and Command — the two matters

“Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds” (7:54)
الْخَلْقُ — The Creation

وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا — “And the sky, We raised it”

→
الْأَمْر — The Command

وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ — “And He placed down the scale”

Perspective: from chaos to harmony

Worldview centred on earth

When humans focused on the earth as the centre of the universe they saw chaos outside of it.

Looking to the sky

As understanding of the universe grew, more order and harmony were found. He mentions raising the sky before placing the scale—implying that when you focus upon the sky you will find balance.

Guidance from above

Until this day humans look to the sky to be guided and directed in the right direction—and spiritually, guidance can only come from the sky.

One shared principle

Both the material and the spiritual share this constant: Allah placed down a scale (الْمِيزَانَ — Al‑Meezaan).

Key takeaways

  • The raised sky situates humanity beneath a vast order, cultivating humility.
  • Al‑Meezaan introduces accountability: standards to uphold justice.
  • Interpretations of the scale include: justice on earth (Sharee’ah), the Qur’an, the Hereafter’s scale, and the book of deeds; also, a divinely set system preventing chaos.
  • In 7:54, Allah’s Creation and Command correspond here to the raised sky and the placed scale.
  • Shifting focus from an earth‑centred view to the sky reveals balance and harmony; guidance—material and spiritual—relates back to the scale.
