Ayah 56:2
QURANHIVE

No denial. No delay. No deflection.

This ayah presents the coming event as absolute: when its occurrence arrives, no soul will be able to deny it, and nothing will be able to hold it back. The wording intensifies certainty, immediacy, and the overwhelming reality of the Day.

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

It means either no person will be able to deny its occurrence, or there will be no holding its occurrence back.

Primary Meaning

The verse strongly confirms the truth of the event.

One major meaning is that an omitted نَفْس is understood: no person or soul will be able to deny, reject, or lie about its occurrence once it actually happens.

The implication is emphatic: the Day of Resurrection is not a doubtful claim. When it arrives, denial collapses completely.

Second Meaning

Nothing can impede what Allah wills to occur.

Another meaning takes كَاذِبَةٌ as a verbal noun carrying the sense of holding back, preventing, or impeding.

Then the ayah means: there will be no holding its occurrence back. No deflector can turn it away, and nothing can repel it once Allah wills it.

The Laam in لِوَقْعَتِهَا

A central language insight in the verse.

The لِ here is Laam of timing (لَام التَّوْقِيت), carrying the sense of “at the time of” or “when”.

Sense

At its occurrence — meaning: when the event arrives.

Point

Its original function is linked to specification, and its use became common in specifying time by its appointed moment.

This usage also appears in Quranic expressions of timing, including prayer at the decline of the sun, divorce at their prescribed period, and Musa coming at the appointed meeting time.

Alternative Reading of the Laam

Another linguistic possibility.

The لَام may also be understood as Laam of reasoning/cause (لَام التَّعْلِيل).

On this reading, no soul remains in denial because of the severity of its descent and occurrence. The event strikes with such force and certainty that no doubt about the arrival of the Day remains.

What الْوَاقِعَة Signals

A semantic focus of the word itself.

الْوَاقِعَة denotes a powerful falling, and came to be commonly used for the occurrence of a tremendous matter.

It was also used specifically for war, which highlights why it fits here: the word carries gravity, force, and overwhelming consequence.

This is not neutral occurrence. It is an event of tremendous weight and impact.

It Happens in One Go

A point highlighted by the wording itself.

The wording لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا indicates a single decisive occurrence.

الوَقْعَة indicates a single time: the descent of the Day is portrayed as one overwhelming occurrence, not a gradual or uncertain process.

The Word كَاذِبَةٌ

Expanded lexical and conceptual insight.

Meaning 1

It may describe an omitted نَفْس: no person will be a denier or liar regarding its occurrence.

Meaning 2

It may carry the sense of impeding or slowing down, leading to the meaning: no holding it back.

كَذَبَ in Arabic can be used in the sense of something dropping in strength, failing in its normal function, or losing intensity. From this, the sense of slowing, preventing, or impeding is connected.

Two basic senses mentioned
  • To say something one knows is not true.
  • To say something false, even if one believes it, closely tied to denial.
Day of Judgement implication

There will be liars of both kinds: one who knew truth and called it false, and one who believed lies instead of truth. But when الْوَاقِعَةُ descends, nobody remains able to persist in that state.

Repetition of the Root وَقَعَ

A major rhetorical emphasis in the ayah.

إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

The repeated root intensifies the sense of impact. The language presses the meaning of the event into the listener through recurrence of the same root.

وَقَعَ conveys the sense of striking down hard, and this is often associated in Arabic usage with repeated force. Here, although the event is one, the repetition in wording magnifies its intensity.

Additional Emphasis

A detail in the word's form.

The ending هَاء in وَقْعَة — referring here to the تاء مربوطة — serves the purpose of emphasis.

The verse is therefore layered with emphasis: by meaning, by structure, by root repetition, and even by word form.

What the Ayah Builds in the Reader

A synthesis of the ayah’s meanings.

1

Certainty

The Day is presented as truth beyond doubt. Denial is impossible when it arrives.

2

Inevitability

Nothing can delay, repel, or hold back its occurrence once Allah wills it.

3

Severity

Its descent is so overwhelming that doubt cannot survive before it.

4

Magnitude

The choice of الْوَاقِعَة and the repeated root portray an event of immense force.

5

Final Exposure of Falsehood

Whether falsehood was stubborn denial or mistaken belief in lies, it cannot remain standing when the event descends.
