The ayah highlights those associated with the right hand, identifying a blessed group destined for success.
The People of the Right Hand
وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ
“And the people of the right hand. What are the people of the right hand?”
The ayah distinguishes between being on the right side and receiving one’s book in the right hand.
The phrase “What are the people of the right hand?” magnifies their station and reward.
Who are أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ?
The expression الْيَمِينِ here refers to “the right hand,” pointing to those whose record will be given in their right hands. This marks them as successful people who attain Jannah.
A careful distinction in wording
أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ
Earlier in the surah, this wording points to a place-related meaning: the people who will be situated on the right side on the Day of Judgement.
أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ
Here, the wording shifts to “the right hand,” indicating those whose book is given in their right hands.
“What are the people of the right hand?”
The question is not asking for ordinary information. It carries the force of: “What will make you know the state of the people of the right hand?”
What this ayah emphasizes
- Recognition of a blessed group: the ayah singles out the people of the right hand with honor and attention.
- Precision in Quranic wording: the ayah highlights a meaningful difference between right-side placement and right-hand reception of the book.
- Guaranteed success: these are people who will attain Jannah.
- Rank still matters: their success is real, but they are below the rank of the سَابِقُونَ.
- Magnified reward: the rhetorical question elevates their image and expands the listener’s sense of their reward.
A successful group, with a distinct level
