Ayah 56:40
QURANHIVE

A large contingent from the earlier and the later peoples

This ayah presents a reassuring description of As’haab ul-Yameen — the people of the right hand — as a group made up of many from the earlier peoples and many from the later peoples.

The ayah emphasizes abundance on both sides: a large contingent from the earlier peoples, and a large contingent from the later peoples.

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآَخِرِينَ

“A large contingent from the first (or earlier) peoples and a large contingent from the later peoples.”

Who this ayah is describing

These two verses are about أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ (As’haab ul-Yameen), the people of the right hand.

أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ

The ayah describes them as consisting of a large contingent drawn from both time groupings mentioned in the verse.

Two-part emphasis

The wording highlights fullness on both sides: many from the earlier peoples and many from the later peoples.

The contrast being made

This ayah contrasts As’haab ul-Yameen with السَّابِقُونَ (As-Saabiqoon).

As’haab ul-Yameen

A large contingent from the first or earlier peoples, and a large contingent from the later peoples.

As-Saabiqoon

A large contingent from the first or earlier peoples, but a smaller contingent from the later peoples.

What the repeated phrase communicates

The repetition of “a large contingent” in both halves of the verse visually and conceptually reinforces balance in the description.

  • The earlier peoples are not the only large group mentioned.
  • The later peoples are also explicitly described as a large contingent.
  • This is exactly where the verse differs from the description of As-Saabiqoon.
