Ibn ‘Ashour: worldly fire reminds people of the fire of Jahannam, inviting comparison between what they witness now and a burning that is far more severe and abiding.

Al-Qurtubi from Qatadah: the fire of this world is an admonition and warning pointing to the greater Fire of the Hereafter.

Al-Qurtubi from Mujahid: it may also refer to enabling people to see from darkness.

Ar-Razi, first interpretation: it is a reminder of the Fire of Al-Qiyamah, so when a rational person sees a blazing fire, that person should fear Allah and His punishment.

القَواء refers to desolate, deserted, uninhabited land with no rain; القِيّ refers to a state of wasteland-like emptiness.
المُقْوِي is one who travels through this barren emptiness, and المُقْوِين refers to those journeying in desolate places who rely on fire.
These travellers use fire to prepare food, keep warm, and benefit from its presence in harsh open land.
The verbal family around قَوِيَ also carries implications of strength and power.

Traveller in barren wilderness

Ibn ‘Ashour describes الْمُقْوِي as one who enters the barren wilderness. In that setting, fire serves as light in encampments, warmth in cold conditions, and a sign seen by wayfarers at night, guiding them toward lodging and shelter.

Hungry person

He also notes that the word can apply to a hungry person because the stomach has become empty of food. This too derives from the sense of emptiness in الْقَوَاءِ.

This wording is especially fitting: it gathers both meanings together, showing fire as benefit for the traveller in the wild and for the hungry who need to cook food, whether settled or journeying.
