Ayah 56:92
QURANHIVE

The deniers, and the ones left astray

This ayah presents the category of those who rejected the truth and remained lost. Its wording highlights language, sequence, and scene: denial is foregrounded here because the moment is now death, resurrection, and the unveiling of their final condition.

وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ

“And as for if he was from the deniers and those who are astray”.

Language points

The ayah identifies a specific group through two descriptions. These are distinct, yet closely connected.

الْمُكَذِّبِينَ

Al-Mukadh’dhibeen — “Deniers”

Those who called something a lie or declared it to be false: belief in Allah, the Qur’an, the Messenger ﷺ, the message, and resurrection.

الضَّالِّينَ

Ad-Daalleen — “Those who are astray”

Those who are lost, who lost their way, and are away from the path.

Core relationship

These descriptions are not random labels. They are linked by a moral and existential logic:

Being lost is the guaranteed outcome of being a مُكَذِّب — someone who rejects the truth.

Denial of truth Loss of guidance Astray from the path Final exposure at judgement

The reversal in order matters

Earlier in Surah Al-Waqi‘ah, the people of the left hand were addressed with “astray” before “deniers”. Here, at the conclusion of the surah, the order is reversed: “deniers” before “astray”.

Earlier in the surah

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ

The discussion concerns what their fate will be. The address presents their state with “astray” first, then “deniers”.

At the conclusion

وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ

The scene now places the reader inside the moment of death and judgement. Denial comes first, then the permanent state of being lost.

Two different scenes

Beginning of the surah

This speaks about what will happen to the three categories. It is a declaration of fate ahead.

End of the surah

The reader is placed inside the unfolding moment itself: death, judgement, and the direct facing of the final outcome.

Why denial is highlighted first here

Because this is the scene of resurrection, their crime of denying resurrection is foregrounded. What they rejected is now the very reality standing before them.

Their denial is directly related to their denial of resurrection, and because this is the scene of resurrection, that denial is highlighted first.

What the reversal implies

Exposure of reality

When they face their fate and punishment, the مُكَذِّبِينَ are shown for what they truly are: the ones lost and astray.

From chance to no return

In the worldly life, they were lost and denying, but there was still a chance to find the way. At death, that opportunity is over.

Permanent consequence

Because they remained deniers, they become forever lost, with no chance left for finding their way.

Concept map of the ayah

Denial

Calling truth false: Allah, the Qur’an, the Messenger ﷺ, the message, and resurrection.

Unveiling

At judgement, their denial is no longer hidden behind worldly delay. Its true result is exposed.

Final state

The denier is shown as truly astray; remaining in rejection ends in irreversible loss.

Reading lens for this ayah
