57:29

QURANHIVE

Surah Al-Hadid · Ayah 29

All bounty is in Allah’s hand.

The People of the Scripture possess no power over Allah’s favour. Revelation, messengership, mercy and forgiveness remain entirely under His authority. He grants His bounty to whom He wills.

“[This is] so that the People of the Scripture may know that they are not able [to obtain] anything from the bounty (or favour) of Allah and that [all] bounty (or favour) is in the hand of Allah; He gives it to whom He wills. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty (or favour)”.

The addressed community

Authority over scripture does not grant authority over divine favour.

The ayah addresses the People of the Scripture, with particular force toward the leaders and knowledgeable people among the Jews and Christians who actively adhered to the Book, represented it and claimed authority through it.

Ahl-ul-Kitaab

This expression can denote those who actively adhere to the Book, represent it and claim religious authority through it. Here it directly confronts the leaders and knowledgeable people of the Jewish and Christian communities.

A meaningful distinction

Those identified with adherence, representation and authority through the Book.

“Those who have been given the Book,” a broader and more general expression.

Language and meaning

The construction لِّئَلَّا carries two grammatical readings.

The treatment of the negative particle determines whether the People of the Book come to know their lack of control or remain unaware of it.

The structure of لِّئَلَّا

The construction joins لِ + أن + لَا and literally carries the form “so that not.” It is followed by يَعْلَمَ, “to know.”

لِ Li
أن An
Laa
Li’allaa · “so that not”
Dominant reading

The negative is treated as زَائِدَة

Many treat the لَا as زَائِدَة—extra and superfluous without an independent negative meaning. The construction therefore functions as “so that.”

“So that the Ahl ul-Kitaab (People of the Book) know that they have no power over anything related to the Fadl (favour) of Allah.”

Result: they come to know that they possess no power or control over Allah’s favour.

Retained negative

The negative keeps its negating force.

The لَا retains its ordinary negative implication. The ayah then describes the People of the Book as failing to realise that they have no control over Allah’s favour.

“So that the People of the Book don’t (get to) know that they don’t have any control over anything from Allah’s favour, and that the favour is in the hand of Allah, He gives it to whom He wills and Allah is the possessor of the great (or ultimate) favour”.

Result: their leadership remains unaware of its own lack of control and continues to imagine that it can determine where divine favour belongs.

The central reality

Favour is granted, never controlled.

The bounty is in the hand of Allah.

The People of the Book cannot direct, reserve or claim Allah’s favour. Their belief that they are inherently favoured, chosen and saved does not give them any authority over its destination. Allah gives His favour to whomever He wills.

The Qur’an

The favour can refer to revelation. A community previously chosen to receive revelation violated Allah’s Book, and Allah granted that favour elsewhere. They possessed no authority to prevent its transfer.

Mercy and forgiveness

The favour also connects to the preceding ayah’s two portions of mercy and forgiveness. A claim to chosen status does not guarantee either gift.

Messengership

Allah chooses where messengership is placed. He sent the Qur’an to Muhammad ﷺ, and no community possessed a say in that choice.

فَضْل means something extra. It is not earned, owed or subject to human control. An extra special favour can be taken away when it is not appreciated.

The final two ayat

Five concluding realities gather the surah’s message.

Each point completes a major thread established in an earlier section of Surah Al-Hadid.

01

Have Taqwaa of Allah

Remain mindful, conscious and fearful of Allah.

02

Believe in His Messenger

Faith brings two portions from Allah’s mercy.

03

Walk with light

Allah makes a light by which the believer walks.

04

Receive forgiveness

Allah forgives those who respond with Taqwaa and faith.

05

Recognise Allah’s control

The People of the Book control neither revelation, messengership, two portions of mercy, forgiveness nor the placement of any divine favour.

Surah-wide correlation

The conclusion gathers all five preceding sections.

The surah’s earlier declarations return as five concise outcomes: Taqwaa, faith, light, forgiveness and Allah’s exclusive control over His favour.

01

Allah’s complete awareness → Taqwaa

Mindfulness concludes the reality of being fully known.

He is with you wherever you are.
Allah sees what you do.
He knows what is within the chests.
Concludes in
Have Taqwaa of Allah.
02

Faith and multiplied reward → double mercy

Belief in the Messenger leads to two portions of mercy.

Believe in Allah and His Messenger.
He will multiply it for him, and for him is a generous or noble reward.
Concludes in
Believe in His Messenger; He will give you two portions from His mercy.
03

The light sought → the light used to walk

The central section’s image returns directly in the conclusion.

Their light proceeds before them and on their right.
Look for the light.
Concludes in
He will make a light for you to walk with—or in.
04

Race toward forgiveness → receive forgiveness

The commanded race reaches its promised end.

Race to forgiveness from your Rabb—Lord and Master.
Concludes in
He will forgive you.
05

Allah sends His Messengers → Allah places His favour

The choice of messengers belongs entirely to Allah.

We surely sent Our Messengers.
We surely sent Nuh and Ibrahim.
We followed with ‘Isa, the son of Maryam.
Concludes in
The favour is in Allah’s hand; He gives it to whom He wills.

A balanced five-section structure

Sections one and five correspond, sections two and four correspond, and the third section stands alone at the centre.

Section 1 Allah’s awareness
Section 5 Messengers and divine choice
Section 2 Faith and multiplied reward
Section 4 Race toward forgiveness
Section 3 Light at the centre

Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

No lineage, institution, scholar or community owns divine favour. Revelation, messengership, mercy, light and forgiveness remain Allah’s gifts, placed entirely by His will.
