“And listen for the Day when the caller will call from a near place”.

Overview

In this Aayah Allah is commanding His Messenger to listen for the Day in which the Angel will blow the second blowing of the trumpet from a nearby place.

Tone and focus: alert attention, nearness of the call, and certainty of the event.

Insights and Nuances

Key details emphasized within the explanation.

Anticipation and Vigilance

The Messenger ﷺ and the companions were in a state of anticipation regarding the coming of the Day of Judgment. They were not in a state of comfort about it being far away or that the minor or major signs had yet to occur.

“How can I be comfortable when the one with the horn is holding it to his lip, his ears listening for when he will be ordered to blow, so he can blow”

— At-Tirmidhi

The Call and the Trumpet

The command “listen” directs attention to the Day when the Angel will blow the second blowing of the trumpet—an event announced as if from a place near.

Alternative Interpretation

This can also refer to when the Angel of death calls upon each person—and that we should listen to that call when it is being made for us.

“From a nearby place” — Layers of Meaning

مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ
“From a nearby place” may indicate:
  • Physical nearness of the place of calling.
