تَبْصِرَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍ
“As an insight and as a reminder for every slave that keeps on coming back (to Allah)”.
Tabsirah • Insight Dhikraa • Reminder
Purpose and grammatical lens
Grammar: Maf‘ool li-Ajlihi (Reason)
تَبْصِرَةً is in the Maf‘ool li-Ajlihi form, explaining the reason behind the action. It links back to what was previously mentioned of the sky and the earth and their beauties, mountains and vegetation—given so that it be an insight for us: to see the evidence of the power and capability of our Creator. Likewise, وَذِكْرَىٰ is also provided as a reason.
Language points and morphology
تَبْصِرَةً (Tabsirah)
- Root and pattern
بَصَّرَ – يُبَصِّرُ – تَبْصِيرًا. تَبْصِيرًا means “to make someone see”. تَبْصِرَةً is a hyperbolised form (Mubālaghah) — “to really make someone see”.
- Force of meaning
The signs of the sky and earth are made to really make you see — to compel awareness of the Creator’s power.
ذِكْرَىٰ (Dhikraa)
Two layers of seeing
The ayah calls for both visual appreciation and deeper insight.
بَصَر (Basar)
Seeing the physical manifestation and visual beauty.
بَصِيرَة (Baseerah)
Deeper seeing — perceiving what lies behind the beauty and reflecting on its source.
The verse implies: “I wanted you to see what you can physically appreciate and also to think about where this beauty came from.”
Who is the ‘Abd Muneeb?
عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍ (Slave who keeps returning)
Morphology: اِسْمُ الفاعِل
مُنِيب is the active participle from أَنَابَ (Anaaba), meaning to keep coming back time after time. Returning is not confined to formal worship or reminders: it also occurs when one looks at the sky or climbs a mountain.
Interpretive focus
- Predominant interpretation
مُنِيب refers to the slave who keeps turning back to Allah.
- NAK interpretation
The returning is to the fitrah (the nature Allah created us upon). The signs of sky and earth serve as insight and as a reminder of that fitrah.
Transitivity and nuanced shades
Laazim and Muta‘addin
Intransitive and transitive dimensions
مُنِيب can describe one who keeps turning back (intransitive) and one who causes others to turn back (transitive).
Implication: creation’s beauty can inspire your return to Allah and move others to return as well.
Cyclical return
The verb أَنَابَ can also mean to take turns — suggesting recurring, renewed turning back.
Rejuvenation
مُنِيب is also used for a person or thing that rejuvenates itself or something else.
Mind and heart engaged
The ayah addresses both the intellectual and the spiritual dimensions.
تَبْصِرَة — Intellectual
Engages reasoning: to really make one see the evidence within creation.
ذِكْرَىٰ — Spiritual
Stirs remembrance: a powerful reminder to the oft-returning slave.
The signs of Allah’s beautiful creation are for every oft-returning slave (عَبْد مُنِيب) to engage the mind and the heart.
Implication for the oft-returning
The slave who returns often to Allah will be provided with more than enough in creation to see, ponder, and be reminded by.
