Qur'an 50:9 — Blessed Rain, Gardens, and Harvest

وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً مُّبَارَكًا فَأَنبَتْنَا بِهِ جَنَّاتٍ وَحَبَّ الْحَصِيدِ

“And we sent down (little by little) blessed water from the sky. Then we sprouted (or made to grow) by means of it multiple gardens and grain of the harvest”.

Blessed water (Maa’an Mubaarakan) Gardens (Jannaat) Grain of the harvest (Habba l-Haseed)
Key Themes

Gradual rain, endowed blessing, and flourishing outcomes

A concise map of the concepts present in the ayah and its language insights.

Gradual Sending

نَزَّلْنَا (Nazzalnaa) from نَزَّلَ (Nazzala) implies “to send down not all at once or gradually” — rain that does not come as a deluge that would ruin crops.

This is like the sending down of revelation in that it was sent overtime in a manner that did not overwhelm those receiving it.

Endowed Increase and Stability

مَاءً مُّبَارَكًا (Maa’an Mubaarakan): مُّبَارَك (Mubaarak) from بَارَكَ (Baaraka) means “to enhance or increase beyond expectation”.

It conveys staying power and a greater‑than‑expected increase.

Outcomes of the Rain

جَنَّاتٍ (Jannaat): vegetation, plants, trees, all types of green growth.

حَبَّ الْحَصِيدِ (Habba l‑Haseed): the crops and grains that are farmed and harvested.

Language Points and Insights

Tracing meanings within key Arabic terms

Selected notes exactly as analyzed in the explanation.

On نَزَّلْنَا (Nazzalnaa)

نَزَّلْنَا (Nazzalnaa)
From نَزَّلَ (Nazzala): “to send down not all at once or gradually”; rain comes in a measured way, not as a ruinous deluge.
This is like revelation: sent over time, not overwhelming its recipients.

On مَاءً مُّبَارَكًا (Maa’an Mubaarakan)

مُّبَارَك (Mubaarak)
From بَارَكَ (Baaraka): “to enhance or increase beyond expectation”.
بَرَكَ (Baraka) & بَارَكَ (Baaraka)
“Baraka” in Arabic refers to a camel “kneeling”. “Baaraka” combines two meanings: 1) increase/enhanced expectation, and 2) stability.
Implication for water
Water has been sent down endowed with the capability to stay and provide an unexpected increase. Vegetation will spring out from the earth; life will spread through winds producing more life, all of which will feed animals which will feed other animals and so on — its increasing benefit is difficult to calculate, thus aptly described as مُّبَارَك (Mubaarak).

Passive Participle and Divine Attribution

مُّبَارَك (Mubaarak)
It is an Ism ul‑Maf’ool (Passive participle): “has been given this power”.
مُتَبَارِك (Mutabaarik) and تَبَارَكَ (Tabaaraka)
If it had this power in itself, it would be Mutabaarik from Tabaaraka. That is why we say تَبَارَكَ الله (Tabaarakallah) because Allah has this power in Himself.
Thus for water
“Water that has been endowed with the ability or power of stability and enhancement or giving increase”.

The Qur’an as مُبَارَك

كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ
“It is a Mubaarak book that we have sent down to you” (Sad: 29).
It implies the Qur’an is here to stay; it produces goodness and benefit far beyond expectation and keeps on producing. Just as with rain, we do not know all of the effects it will have.
Concept Visuals

From sky to soil: effect that keeps increasing

Abstract visuals to mirror the text’s flow: measured descent, enduring blessing, flourishing growth.

Measured Descent

Rain sent “not all at once” — protective of crops and akin to revelation sent over time.

Gardens (Jannaat)

Vegetation, plants, trees — all types of green growth sprouting by means of the rain.

Grain of the Harvest

Crops and grains that are farmed and harvested — the yield sustained by the blessed water.

Chain of Benefit

From the blessed water: vegetation springs out; life spreads through winds producing more life; animals are fed which feed other animals — a widening circle of benefit.

The full extent of this increase is difficult for the mind to calculate.

Parallels with Revelation

As rain’s effects unfold beyond expectation, so too does the Qur’an’s benefit when it is benefitted from — here to stay and continually producing good.
