“No doubt, the Muttaqeen will be in Jannaat (gardens) and ‘Uyoon (springs)”.

Switch to the Muttaqeen — Essence and Definitions

Definition

Al‑Muttaqeen

  • Those who protected themselves and were spiritually vigilant.
  • Taqwaa stems from:
وَقَى — Waqaa (“to protect”) وِقَايَة — Wiqaayah (“protection”) اِتَّقَى — Ittaqaa (“to protect oneself”)
  • Does not mean “fear” in this context; rather, taking protective precaution.
  • Having Taqwaa of Allah implies protecting oneself from making Allah displeased.
Language note

Taqwaa is often tied to an object

Examples given:

Allah tells us to have Taqwaa of Himself, the final day, the fire, and the ties of the womb.

Here, Allah mentions the people of Taqwaa (Al‑Muttaqeen). This implies:

  • Those mindful and vigilant about Allah.
  • Linked to this Surah’s context: mindful, conscious and protective concerning what will happen on the Day of Judgement.

Context reveals dimensions

Note

Labels highlight different facets

Terms like كَافِر, مُنَافِق, مُشْرِك and الْمُتَّقِينَ carry dimensions that vary by context. Thus, the nature of disbelief in one passage can differ from another, and likewise the dimensions of Taqwaa can be highlighted differently across Aayaat.

In this Surah’s flow

Protective vigilance that refused deviation

In addition to the main meanings of Taqwaa, here it also implies people who were cautious, careful, and protected themselves from:

  • Being turned away.
  • Becoming الْخَرَّاصُونَ “those who made up alternative facts”.
  • Falling into distraction and being engulfed in that: فِي غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ
  • Becoming like those who question the Day of Judgement itself: أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
  • Or like those who will be tested (or punished) upon the fire: عَلَى النَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَ

“Fi Jannaatin wa ‘Uyoon” — Reward, contrast, immersion

Jannaat

Gardens

Comfort, ease, and delights — a complete, serene environment granted to those who protected themselves (Al‑Muttaqeen).

‘Uyoon

Springs

Flowing relief and calm, contrasting the previous mention of being “upon the fire”.

Contrast

From distraction vs. to serenity

Those who in worldly life were drowning in distraction and seeking to maintain comfort are contrasted with the Muttaqeen who refused distraction and self‑comfort chasing; they now receive true comfort in gardens and springs.

Immersed in lies and distraction

  • “Those who made up alternative facts”
  • Engulfed in distraction
  • Questioning the Day أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
  • Tested/punished upon the fire

Immersed in a stress‑free environment

  • Gardens and springs — true comfort and ease for those who protected themselves.
  • Reward that mirrors their protective vigilance against falsehood and distraction.

Mindset of the Muttaqeen highlighted here

Protective precaution

Guarding oneself from what displeases Allah; not mere fear, but active protection.

Object‑aware Taqwaa

Often directed toward Allah, the final day, the fire, and ties of the womb; here the people of Taqwaa are spotlighted.

Caution against deviation

Active resistance to lies, distraction, denial of the Day, and the path leading to the fire.
