Ayah 51:16 Landing Page

آخِذِينَ مَا آتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَ

51:16

“Taking whatever their Master (Rabb) has given them. Indeed, they were before that Muhsineen (people of excellence)”.

Taking eagerly Muhsineen before it Gardens and rewards

Language points and insights

آخِذِينَ — “Taking” with eagerness

آخِذِينَ implies the people of Jannah will be taking up whatever Allah provides to them eagerly.

It can also imply “indulging” or “absorbing” everything they are exposed to: the place, clothing, food, company, breeze, fragrances — taking it all in.

This readiness contrasts sharply with worldly distraction.

True indulgence vs. counterfeit indulgence

Their state contrasts with:

  • الْخَرَّاصُونَ — “those who made up alternative facts”.
  • فِي غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَ — in a flood of distraction.

They indulged in a fake “paradise” in worldly life, whereas the Muttaqoon indulge in the true Jannah.

مَا آتَاهُمْ — two complementary readings

  • “Whatever He provides them with” in Jannah — they take it eagerly now.
  • “Whatever He had provided them with” before — they are now taking rewards because they fulfilled what Allah had given them of commands in the first life.

Words of giving from أَتَى and taking from أَخَذَ echo a Qur’anic command:

وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانتَهُوا

“Whatever the Messenger gave you, take it. And whatever he forbade you, cease and desist” (Al-Hashr: 7).

They used to take His instructions and commands — now those very obediences have become gifts and rewards.

Related Hadith — the greatest gift

Allah will say to the inhabitants of Jannah: “Are you pleased?” They will acknowledge the unmatched gifts they have received. Allah will then say: “Shall I not give you something better than that?”

“I shall bestow My Pleasure upon you and I shall never be displeased with you.”

Agreed upon.

مُحْسِنِينَ — who are they?

  • Ihsaan implies excellence in conduct and action — doing things in the best manner.
  • It includes doing good to others and the pursuit of continual improvement.
  • Famous definition: “Ihsaan is to worship Allah as if you see Him”.
The Muttaqoon are in gardens and springs — because prior to that they were Muhsineen. Taqwaa leads to Ihsaan.

Synthesis — from obedience to overflowing reward

Eager reception

The people of Jannah are taking whatever their Rabb gives — not passively, but with heartfelt eagerness and deep appreciation, absorbing every provision.

Moral cause

Their present bliss has a prior cause: they were Muhsineen before — practicing excellence, doing good, refining their actions.

Principle of taking

They “took” the Messenger’s instructions in life; now those taken commands have become “taken” rewards — measure for measure, but multiplied in grace.
