Ayah 51:57

“I do not want from them any Rizq (provision), and I do not want them to feed Me”.

Rizq: tangible & intangible Allah is free of need Worship benefits us

Rizq: Layers of Provision

Definition (Lisan ul-‘Arab)

“The Arzaaq (plural of Rizq – “Provision”) are two kinds: That which is apparent (or tangible/physical) for the bodies like foodstuffs and those which are hidden inside (or intangible/non-physical) for the hearts and Nufoos (inner selves) like insights (Ma’aarif) and fields of knowledge (‘Uloom)”

Provision nourishes body and inner self.

Context

Idol worshippers present food and items to their false idols. Allah declares He is in no need of such Rizq or to be fed. He also does not need validation from worshippers, nor is He enhanced or diminished by worship.

Allah’s Complete Freedom From Need

Nothing enhances or diminishes Him

“Allah is free of any need and want and your own needs for nourishment and sustenance cannot be projected to Allah.”

"Everyone on earth perishes; All that remains is the Face of your Lord, full of majesty, bestowing honour."

Surah Ar-Rahman 55:26-27

These establish that Allah retains Majesty and Honour even when none remain to praise Him.

Offerings do not apply to Him

“All religions throughout history have upheld notions of needing to give something to God for them to get something back... However, this is contrary to Allah’s being as he is completely free of any need or want from them.”

Nuance in the Ayah: Rizq vs Feeding

Food mentioned separately

“Food falls under the category of Rizq but is mentioned separately here.”

Notice the shift in form: “Rizq” (noun) vs “to feed” (verb).

Al-Alousiy’s Insight

“This verse clarifies that His relationship with His servants… is not like that of masters with their slaves, for masters possess slaves to benefit from them in acquiring livelihood and provision… I do not seek their assistance, as slave owners seek help from their slaves. Instead let them occupy themselves with what they were created for: My worship.”

  • He does not want provision from them: مَا أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ
  • Nor service to benefit Him: وَمَا أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِ

Who Benefits From Worship?

The worshipper benefits

“The only one who benefits from servitude, humility and submissiveness to Allah is the one who does that.”

Al-Israa’ (17:7) — cited: “If you do good (act well), then you have done well for yourselves”.

“The good that we do is only for ourselves and we have not added to Allah’s kingdom or glory by anything that we do because we can’t.”

Do not project human needs onto Allah

“Your own needs for nourishment and sustenance cannot be projected to Allah.” He is their Creator and Sustainer, utterly independent, while creation is in need of Him “in all their circumstances”.

Key Takeaways

No Rizq required from creation

He neither seeks provision from them nor to be fed.

Validation not sought

Worship does not increase or decrease His Majesty and Honour.

Worship is for our good

Good deeds benefit ourselves; His Kingdom is not augmented by us.
