Contextual insight

Reward after warning

Just like in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, Allah is highlighting here this quality of being from the Muttaqeen in connection to the attainment of Jannah (Gardens of paradise). In Surah Adh-Dhariyat, after mentioning the punishment of fire for those deserving it, Allah states:

إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ
Surah Adh-Dhariyat

Here, after mentioning the punishment of fire for those deserving it, Allah states: إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَعِيم. However, unlike Surah Adh-Dhariyat, after mentioning this reward for the Muttaqeen, Allah provides details of this reward in Surah At-Tur.

Language points and insights

Who are Al‑Muttaqeen?

They are those who have Taqwaa — being mindful and conscious of Allah. In origin it refers to the “protection of oneself”, done by being mindful and aware of Allah to protect yourself from His anger and its consequences.

  • Also implies protecting oneself from one’s own impulses and desires pushing towards disobedience to Allah.
  • Human emotions and feelings should be channelled and directed by Taqwaa — with awareness of Allah and what He commanded.
Surah At-Taghabun
Surah An-Nazi’at
Surah Al-Furqan

Na’eem — depth of the bliss

Na’eem implies ease, comfort, pleasantness and luxury. From its root, Nu’oomah indicates softness, gentleness and comfort — everything in Paradise caters to one’s comfort.

Surah At-Takathur

Na’eem is frequently used to describe Jannah in the Qur’an; here it highlights unburdened ease and pleasure.

Root sense: softness • gentleness • comfort
In gardens and Na’eem

Beyond worldly trade‑offs

  • Even if people can have “Gardens” to some degree in this life, they do not attain Na’eem as complete luxury and ease without worries.
  • Luxuries here typically come at a price; conveniences often require compromising other comforts.

In Paradise: “In gardens and uninhibited ease, comfort and pleasure” — no costs, compromises or trade‑offs.

External and internal ease

Being in Na’eem implies the internal comfort and ease of the mind and emotional state — not just external comfort and ease.

Inner serenity • Outer delight
Mindset and outcome

Taqwaa‑driven living → protection

Al‑Muttaqeen actively seek to protect themselves by maintaining consciousness of Allah in their actions and situations they face in the worldly life.

The reward for protecting oneself in the Dunyaa is a life in the hereafter where there is no longer any concern for needing to protect oneself.
