Ayah 52:44

وَإِن يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا سَحَابٌ مَّرْكُومٌ

And if they were to see a fragment from the sky falling down, they would say: “[It is merely] clouds heaped up”.

“فَذَكِّرْ” — Remind

This ayah concludes a section that began with the instruction to the Prophet ﷺ to remind, followed by the accusations levelled against him, and a series of challenges exposing the falsehood and insincerity behind those accusations.

“Even if they were to see a piece of the sky falling down, they would say: ‘clouds piled up’.”

Context of this passage

  • Begins with Allah’s instruction to the Prophet ﷺ: فَذَكِّرْ — “to remind”.
  • Followed by accusations against him: “soothsayer”, “madman” and “poet” — as a pretext to cast doubt and reject the Qur’an.
  • Then, a host of challenges from Allah exposing their falsehood, the insincerity of their motives, and that they have nothing substantial to support their arguments.

Reminding versus convincing

Reminding someone is not the same as convincing someone. These people are not interested in being convinced; they prefer to scheme and maintain power, wealth and control.

Rejection here is not due to a deficiency in the conveyance of Islam.

Mindset underlying the rejection

قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ “A people who believe in their right to assert dominance without restrictions or limits.”
لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ “They do not believe.”
لَّا يُوقِنُونَ “They don’t want clarity or to be convinced.”

They are averse to what the Prophet ﷺ is calling them to because it does not benefit their ambitions and wishes.

يُرِيدُونَ كَيْدًا — “They want to scheme.”

They seek to maintain power, wealth and control, pretending to have legitimate reasons while casting and propagating doubts about the Messenger ﷺ.

Clear signs — and their dismissal

  • They can be provided with the most powerful heavenly evidence.
  • Yet they will still dismiss it with ridiculously weak explanations or excuses.
  • Whatever clear signs they are shown, it will make no difference: they are not interested in believing in the message.

وَإِن يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا سَحَابٌ مَّرْكُومٌ

They would say: “It is merely clouds piled up.”

What truly drives the denial

They pretend to have legitimate reasons for their denial and propagate doubts about the Messenger ﷺ, but in truth they are scheming a malicious plot.

Their real god is money, influence and power, and what the Prophet ﷺ calls to is a threat to that.

Key takeaways

  • The Prophet ﷺ is commanded to remind; convincing those who refuse clarity is not the same task.
  • Their rejection stems from motives and power interests — not from lack of evidence or poor conveyance.
  • Even the clearest signs will be dismissed by those intent on scheming and maintaining control.
