Language points
LinguisticsSignificance of the construct
FocusThe phrasing “عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَىٰ” implies that only there is the Garden of Refuge. No other beautiful place or acquisition possesses المَأْوَى — the realization of permanent safety and security.
Opinions regarding “the Garden of refuge”
Scholars- Al-Imam Al-Alousiy: This is evidence that Jannah is in the Samaa’ (heaven/sky).
- Qatadah: A garden that the souls of the martyrs are given refuge in, not the same as the one promised to the Muttaqeen.
- Another view: A garden that the Angels (peace be upon them) have as a refuge.
- Reading (Qirāʾah) mentioned by Al-Alousiy: جَنَّهُ الْمَأْوَىٰ Here, with ه instead of the ة, it conveys: “he was covered by the refuge”.
Human pursuit and the true refuge
InsightsWe seek security and permanence
Humans develop and seek refuges in life to feel secure and safe — a lasting مَأْوَى.
Worldly beauty is not ultimate refuge
Homes, families, and acquisitions can be beautiful, but they are never absolutely secure or permanently safe.
Only in Jannah is refuge realized
Jannah is the first time humans accomplish the real and ultimate refuge — safeguarded from all fears.
