إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ
“When (all of a sudden) the Lote tree was being covered by that which covers it”.
A moment enveloped by coverings — present in expression, remembered from the past.
Language insights
Temporal nuance of expression
- إِذْ with the present tense indicates a past event: إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ “When (all of a sudden) the Lote tree was being covered”.
- مَا يَغْشَىٰ “what covers it” remains in the present tense, conveying that this reality — though it occurred in the past — continues to be recalled and felt later by the Messenger ﷺ who witnessed it.
Semantic imagery and word choice
Allah uses يَغْشَى meaning “to cover.” From it comes غَاشِيَة, one meaning of which is “a low tree.”
This can depict an image of the Sidrah (Lote tree) being overtaken by something — the covering itself being covered by something even more.
Visual representation
An abstract motif to suggest successive “coverings” without defining what they are.
Layers upon layers
A concentric, soft-hued veil evoking a covering that itself is covered even more.
Abstract concentric rings suggesting successive coverings around a central point.
Lexical notes
غَاشِيَة
Derived from يَغْشَى; one of its meanings is “a low tree.”
السِّدْرَة
The Lote tree (Sidrah) referenced in the verse.
Scholarly perspective
Ath-Tha’aalibi in his Tafsir “Jawaahir Al-Hisaan”: “The scholars of Tafsir have mentioned various opinions however that represents a forced or unwarranted interpretation of the verse because Allah left it ambiguous (i.e., a mystery). They are seeking its explanation whilst he (i.e., the Prophet ﷺ) stated: “It was covered by colours which I don’t know what they are”.”
— Ath-Tha’aalibi, Jawaahir Al-Hisaan
Key emphasis
• The verse deliberately leaves “what covers” unspecified; avoid forced explanations.
• The wording couples a past event with a present expression, reflecting enduring recall by the Messenger ﷺ.
• The choice of “covering” suggests overwhelming layers — a covering overtaken by even more.
