Surah 54:50 — The immediacy of the Divine Command

وَمَا أَمْرُنَا إِلَّا وَاحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ
54:50

“And Our command is not except one single word, like a quick glance of the eye”

Nu’man Ali Khan: “And Our divine intervention is executed in nothing more than can be compared to a momentary glance of the eyes”.
The Seen Creation and the Unseen Command

الخَلْق · al-Khalq — the Creation

Refers to the material world, measured and bound by set laws of physics and creation.

54:49 context Measured laws

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ

“Verily, We created everything with a Qadar.”

الأَمْر · al-Amr — the Command

Relates to the unseen dimension; it is not restricted by those laws — timeless and immediate.

Timeless & immediate

إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُ كُن فَيَكُونُ

“Verily, His command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it: ‘Be!’ and it is!”

Pairing of Khalq and Amr

These are often paired in the Qur’an: the command of Allah brings into being — “Be”, then it is.

أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ

“Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command.”

When the Command touches the Creation

A clear example

Divine intervention from the realm of Amr entering the realm of Khalq:

قُلْنَا يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

“We said: ‘O fire! Be you cool and safety for Ibrahim!’”

Splitting of the moon The Qur’an Angels at Badr Punishments to nations

Note: Many exegetes relate al-Amr broadly to the command of Allah; not only to rare interventions.

The speed of the Command

كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ — “like a quick glance of the eye”

Lamh refers to a very quick glance — a flash or flicker of vision — even quicker than the idiom “in the blink of an eye”.

Momentary glance Immediate execution

وَاحِدَةٌ — feminine form

Waahidah is feminine although Amr is masculine, indicating an omitted, understood word — likely كَلِمَة “a word”. Its omission itself accentuates the speed: as if mentioning it would slow the meaning down.

One single word
A theme of sight and vision in the Surah

Seeing signs, humbled sights

These references harmonize with the “glance” metaphor to stress authority and immediacy.

وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا

“And if they see an Ayah, they turn away.”

خُشَّعًا أَبْصَارُهُمْ

“Their sights (eyes) will be downcast or humbled.”

A look suffices for execution
Surrendering the when and how

We cannot hasten the Amr of Allah

It comes when and how He decides. Our role is surrender — not to expedite it.

أَتَىٰ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ

“The Amr of Allah has all but arrived, so, don’t seek to hasten it.”

Exegetical perspective

Scope of al-Amr in tafsir

Most Mufassireen do not restrict the Amr of Allah to rare divine interventions; they relate it more broadly to the command of Allah. Khalq and Amr are often paired with “Be — then it is”.

Key takeaways at a glance

Authority

When the authority is absolute, a mere look suffices for execution — echoed by “like a quick glance”.

Immediacy

One single word — without delay — characterizes the Amr of Allah.

Trust

Surrender the timing and modality of the Amr; do not seek to hasten it.
