The universal declaration of perfection

“Whatever is in the skies and the earth (has always) declared Allah’s perfection and He is the ultimate authority, possessor of absolute wisdom”.

Universal tasbeeh Every created thing declares Allah’s perfection.
Absolute authority Allah overpowers and is never overpowered.
Flawless wisdom Every exercise of His authority is perfectly placed.
Sabbaha

Tasbeeh preserves the highest conception of Allah

The root imagery of س ب ح revolves around extension, sustained movement, and remaining above a lower level. Tasbeeh declares Allah perfect and refuses every thought or statement that diminishes His standing.

Root س ب ح

Extension without submergence

سِبَاحَة denotes swimming above the water without submerging. A running horse is سَابِح when it extends its forelegs. The root carries an image of ongoing movement that does not sink beneath its level.

As-Sibaah
A loose leather shirt for a child that passes over the head without sinking into the body’s shape.
At-Tasabbuh
Something stretched out or extended, such as a branch, leather, or string.
Kisaa’ Musabbah
An outer garment that floats over the body rather than sinking into its form.
Subhan Taweelan
Continuous motion, dispersion, and sustained occupation throughout the day.

Declaring Allah free from every imperfection

Tasbeeh maintains Allah’s rightful level in thought, speech, and belief. Every attribution of a partner, flaw, limitation, purposeless act, failed promise, or hidden weakness violates that declaration.

“Declaring Allah free from all that does not befit Him” — “Exalting Allah above every attribute unworthy of Him”.

“Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him”

At-Tur: 43

“Exalted is Allah above what they describe (concerning Him)”

Al-Mumin’oon: 91
Two dimensions of tasbeeh

Freedom from defect and recognition of absolute Lordship

Tasbeeh contains both Tanzeeh, declaring Allah free from everything unbefitting Him, and Ta’zeem, exalting His creation, ownership, Lordship, and subjugation of all things.

“Part of it (i.e., the Qur’anic usage of Subhaan and Tasbeeh) expresses Tanzeeh, declaring Allah free from anything unbefitting Him: such as attributing to Him a partner or a child, or anything similar to what they allege; or that He might create something in vain or without purpose; or that He might be seen with the physical eye; or that His angels might know something He has not taught them; or that an evil plot could be hidden from Him; or that His promise could fail.”

Muhammad Hasan Jabal · Al-Mu’jam Al-Ishtiqaqiy Al-Mu’assal

“And part of it expresses Ta’zheem (exaltation), which necessarily accompanies Tanzeeh. Its context is when acts such as creation, ownership, lordship, or subjugation are ascribed to Him, exalted is He.”

Muhammad Hasan Jabal · Al-Mu’jam Al-Ishtiqaqiy Al-Mu’assal

“Tasbeeh means removing from Allah, exalted is He, all things that can be considered to be bad. And know that Tasbeeh from all that is bad includes distancing His Essence from all bad, distancing His Attributes, distancing His Acts, distancing His Names, and distancing His Judgments.”

Tafsir of Ar-Razi
The architecture of the ayah

Every grammatical choice expands the meaning

The wording establishes the doer, the sincerity of the act, its universal scope, and the exclusive right of Allah to receive it.

The subject of the declaration

The majority view identifies مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ — “whatever is in the heavens and the earth” — as the مُسْنَد إِلَيْهِ, the entity to which the predicate is attributed. Creation itself performs the tasbeeh.

Ustadh Nu’man presents the five following ayaat as the reasons that everything declares Allah’s perfection. Allah is the grammatical subject in ayaat 3, 4, and 6. In ayaat 2 and 5, مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ is the grammatical subject, while the advanced لَهُ makes Allah the thematic focus and exclusive possessor.

The preposition لِ carries devotion

سَبَّحَ can take a direct object without a preposition. Surah Al-Ahzab states:

“And exalt Him morning and evening”

Al-Ahzab: 42

In سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ, the لِ allows two meanings: creation declares Allah’s perfection, and creation performs this tasbeeh sincerely for Allah Himself. The act flows from willing acknowledgement, not fear alone.

“And He said to it (the sky or heaven) and to the earth: “Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion”. They said: “We have come willingly”

Surah Fussilat: 11

مَا encompasses every individual thing

مَا expresses generality: “whatever” is in the heavens and the earth. It includes everything within them while leaving the full range of creation undefined and beyond human knowledge.

The wording also individualizes the declaration. Each and every created thing performs its own tasbeeh to Allah.

Advancement establishes exclusivity

Standard ordering would place the doer directly after the verb: سَبَّحَ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ لِلَّهِ. The ayah instead advances لِلَّهِ before the doer.

The declaration occurred
For Allah alone
By everything in the heavens and the earth
Only Allah receives this exaltation. Creation does not declare the perfection of anything else.
The cosmic scale

The heavens precede the earth in scale, age, and tasbeeh

The order of السَّمَاوَاتِ before الْأَرْضِ reflects chronological, quantitative, and qualitative dimensions.

A scale beyond human measure

  • The heavens are vastly greater than the earth.
  • The earth is insignificant beside the nearest heaven, with six more heavens beyond it.
  • The heavens are older than the earth.
  • The angels perform tasbeeh in the heavens, and their tasbeeh is superior.
  • Human tasbeeh occupies only a small place within the universal declaration.
Heavens

Human scale

The past tense places humanity late in an ancient chorus

The past tense سَبَّحَ establishes that the heavens and the earth had already been declaring Allah’s perfection long before human existence.

Before humanity

The heavens and the earth already performed tasbeeh.

Human arrival

Human beings enter an act of worship already filling creation.

Present responsibility

Defiance makes no dent in Allah’s universal praise. It only leaves the human being behind.

The form of creation’s tasbeeh remains beyond human perception

“The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them make Tasbeeh to Him. And there is not a thing except that it makes Tasbeeh by His praise, but you do not understand their Tasbeeh”

Surah Al-Israa’: 44
Creation and the human being

All creation fulfills its nature; humanity is called to return to its own

The heavens and the earth

Creation continuously declares its Creator’s perfection

Every created thing acts in harmony with its created nature. Its existence, submission, and tasbeeh recognize Allah as the perfect Creator.

The human responsibility

Neglecting tasbeeh is a departure from fitrah

The human fitrah recognizes the Creator and His perfection. Turning away suppresses what is already deeply rooted within. Turning back to Allah feels like a return because it restores the spiritual dimension that naturally seeks fulfillment.

Al-‘Azeez

Perfect honour joined with unconquerable power

The root of الْعَزِيزُ conveys firmness, strength, resistance, honour, and dominance. Allah is the ultimate authority: He overpowers and is never overpowered.

The Ultimate Authority · The Invincible

العِزّ is the opposite of الذُّلّ, lowliness, humiliation, and weakness. العِزَّة therefore carries both honour and strength.

Honour A position of respect without humiliation or deficiency.
Power The capacity to resist, dominate, and remain unconquered.

The root imagery of firmness

Al-‘Azaaz
Solid, firm, rough ground over which water runs swiftly.
Ista’azza-r-Raml
Sand that has compacted and solidified into clumps.
Ta’azzaza
To become firm, tough, robust, and strong.
عَزَزْتُ القَوْم · ‘Azaztu-l-Qawm
“I strengthened, reinforced or empowered the people or nation.”
Faras Mu’tazzah
A horse with thick flesh and firm, powerful musculature.

“Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes (sheep), and I have one ewe; so he said: 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me (‘Azzaniy) in speech”

Surah Saad: 23
The divine name without human limitation

Allah’s ‘Izzah has no beginning, boundary, or giver

The title العَزِيز can describe a human authority, as the minister who purchased Yusuf was called Al-‘Azeez. Its attribution to Allah is purified from every limitation found in created beings.

  1. No beginning and no end

Human rank begins at a point and can end. Allah’s عِزَّة is eternal and never ceases.

  2. No territorial or created boundary

A governor’s authority is limited to a land, institution, or population. Allah’s authority is unlimited, just as His hearing has no limit when He is السَّمِيع.

  3. Intrinsic and never granted

Human power, hearing, and wisdom are given and dependent. Allah’s names and attributes are ذَاتِي, intrinsic to Him and never bestowed by another.

Tasbeeh itself requires every divine name and attribute to be understood free from these imperfections and from every other flaw unbefitting Allah.

Authority without constraint

Allah acts without dependency, fear, or external control

Created authority always depends on others

Even a tyrannical king depends on powerful individuals, factions, or some degree of public acceptance. Created authority remains exposed to resistance, consequence, and loss.

“He does whatever He wants”

Al-Burooj: 16

Allah’s authority depends on no supporter and faces no constraint. He possesses the power to do whatever He wills without fear of consequence.

Temporary human freedom operates within divine wisdom

Allah can impose His authority immediately, yet He permits human beings to disobey and rebel during this life under the plan for which they were created.

He can override a lying tongue now, yet He allows it to speak. On the Day of Judgement, His authority is imposed absolutely and human limbs speak and testify against their owner.

This delay never indicates diminished power. It displays authority exercised through wisdom.

Al-Hakeem

Wisdom binds every matter into its proper place

The root of حَكَمَ carries restraint, sound judgment, careful construction, and the prevention of disorder.

The Possessor of Absolute Wisdom

حَكَمَةُ اللِّجَام is the restraining part of a horse’s bridle. أَحْكَمَ and إِحْكَام describe something stitched or constructed so well that it holds together and does not fall apart.

A حُكْم is a judgment tightly formed through complete consideration, not a loose or careless conclusion.

Definitions of حِكْمَة

“Placing a thing in its proper place”

“The beneficial knowledge and acting by it”

Hikmah also carries the meaning of knowing the truth and acting by it. Al-Hakeem considers everything related to a matter and produces a perfectly formed decision.

The Qur’an is formed with perfect precision

“Alif Laam Raa [This is] a Book whose verses are put together in a perfect manner (Uhkimat) and then presented in detail from [one who is] Wise and Acquainted.”

Surah Hud: 1

Absolute authority and absolute wisdom are perfectly united

Created beings may possess authority without wisdom or wisdom without authority. Allah possesses both without limit. His power is never arbitrary, and His wisdom is never unable to act.

Al-‘Azeez No one possesses absolute authority besides Allah.
Al-Hakeem No one possesses absolute wisdom besides Allah.
Universal tasbeeh Creation recognizes and declares His flawless perfection.

His authority and wisdom never diminish

Allah’s final revelation came over 1400 years ago, yet His authority and Hikmah are not constrained by time. Its guidance remains perfect for every place and time until the Day of Judgement. The opening ayaat of Surah Al-Hadid reveal why everything in the heavens and the earth gives Allah tasbeeh: He alone is Al-‘Azeez Al-Hakeem, the ultimate Authority and possessor of ultimate wisdom.
