Absolute dominion

“To Him alone belongs the kingdom of the skies and the earth. He gives life and causes death. And He is capable (and powerful) over everything”.

His kingdom Nothing lies outside His control
Life and death Continuously given and caused by Him
Complete capability Measure, determination and power

The opening framework

The kingdom reveals ultimate authority and perfect wisdom

The opening five verses provide reasons for the exaltation of Allah throughout the skies and the earth. They also unfold the meaning of هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ — “He is Al-‘Azeez Al-Hakeem.”

Allah’s exclusive ownership of the heavens and the earth expresses Al-‘Azeez: the possessor of ultimate authority. His dominion, His giving of life, His causing of death and His precise power over everything establish why all creation declares His perfection.

Mulk · Dominion

A kingdom governed directly

مُلْكُ means kingdom or dominion. The owner of a dominion possesses it and has the right to dispose of it as he wishes.

Earthly kingdoms

Authority through proxies

Earthly dominions are run by proxies who carry out a king’s wishes and implement his commands. Their regions differ in how fully decrees are implemented and how firmly control is maintained.

Allah’s kingdom

Direct and absolute governance

Allah has no proxies in His dominion. لَهُ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ means that He alone directly runs the kingdom of the skies and the earth. Nothing, however small, exists outside His control.

01

Exclusive ownership

The entire kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone.

02

Direct governance

No intermediary is needed to carry out His will or maintain His command.

03

Total control

No place, event or smallest created thing escapes His authority.

Yuhyee wa yumeet

Life and death belong to no king

يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ declares, “He gives life and causes death.” Allah begins with what no other king can give: life itself.

No human ownership

The limits of created power

Humans have no control over when they are born or how long they will live. Kings may claim power over who dies and who is allowed to live, but they cannot keep themselves alive or prevent their own death.

Continuous action

The present verb form

The present verb form, المُضَارِع (Al-Mudaari’), indicates continuous action. Allah is constantly giving life and causing death.

The most precious assets of existence

Everything else rests beneath them

Life and death are the most precious assets of existence. Every other worldly possession exists beneath the ultimate reality of being alive. Their placement immediately after the declaration of Allah’s kingdom highlights their greatest significance to human beings.

Physical and spiritual renewal

Life and death are experienced every day

Life and death carry a spiritual dimension alongside their physical reality. Sleep, waking, repentance and response to divine guidance all illuminate forms of death and renewed life.

Sleep and waking

Each morning brings an experienced return to life after the state of sleep.

Repentance and cleansing

Taubah gives life anew as the sinful version of a person is replaced with a cleansed version.

Response and guidance

Responding to Allah and His Messenger leads to that which gives life.

“All praise to Allah who gave us life after causing us death and to Him is the gathering”.

“O you who have believed. Respond affirmatively to Allah and His Messenger when He calls you to that which gives you life”

Al-Anfal: 24

Qadeer

The intensified form of قُدْرَة, power and capability. It conveys extreme capability and extreme power.

The linguistic field

Precision, balance, proportion and strength

The root carries a network of meanings built around exactness, proper measure and effective capability.

Al-Qidr
A cooking pot with a precise covering that allows food to cook quickly.
Al-Aqdar of horses
A balanced, disciplined and high-quality horse whose hind legs land exactly where its forelegs had just landed. Its smooth and efficient movement implies strength and agility.
Al-Qadar
A short neck. Al-Aqdar among men also refers to a short man.
Muqtadir in his Khalq
A person who is middle-sized in form or creation, neither tall nor short.
The Qadr of a thing
Its amount and measurement.
قَدَرَ الشَّيْءَ · Qadara-sh-Shay’a
“He measured it.” Measuring a garment until it comes out according to the مِقْدَار means that it fits. Measuring one thing by another also belongs to this usage.

Three connected meanings

Measure. Capability. Determination.

The Qur’anic use of the root gathers three meanings that converge in the final word of the ayah.

  1. Precise measure

قَدَر carries the meaning of a precise measurement.

“Indeed, We created everything with a Qadar (precise measurement)”

    Al-Qamar: 49
  2. Power and capability

The root expresses the power and capability to perform an act with complete effectiveness.

“Yes. [We are] capable of putting together his fingertips in perfect order”

    Al-Qiyamah: 4
  3. Determined time and outcome

قَدَرَ and قَدَر also express a determined time, outcome or appointed progression.

“Then you came [here] at the decreed time (Qadar), O Musa”

    Ta-Ha: 40

“So, We saved him and his family, except for his wife; We destined her (Qaddarnaahaa) to be of those who remained behind”

    An-Naml: 57

“And the moon - We have determined for it phases”

    Ya-Sin: 39

The meanings converge

Every life and death occurs with exactness

Allah measures, calculates and determines the exact time and place of life and death, together with every circumstance related to them. He possesses complete power and control over their occurrence.

Complete control over life and death demonstrates complete power and control over all things.

Four mentions

The heavens and the earth remain in view

السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ, “the heavens/skies and the earth,” occurs four times in the first six ayaat of Surah Al-Hadid.

The noun is repeated instead of replaced

Al-Izh’haar Fee Maqaam il-Idmaar

Arabic grammar allows a pronoun to replace the heavens and the earth after their first mention. Repeating the nouns instead is (Al-Izh’haar Fee Maqaam il-Idmaar). The repetition brings special attention to the pairing and directs thought toward the relationship between the skies and the earth.

The skies come first

A greater and vaster reality

Human concern centers on the earth, yet the skies are repeatedly mentioned first. The earth is a small reality compared with the sky. The earth depends upon the skies, while the skies do not depend upon the earth.

Human life depends upon the atmosphere, sun and moon. Spiritual life also depends upon what descends from the sky: revelation that provides purpose and guidance.

The greater establishes the lesser

Dominion includes accountability

Allah’s dominion over the skies, which are much greater and vaster than the earth, establishes by greater reason His dominion over the earth.

The One who controls all the skies has not left humanity to roam the earth without consequences. His dominion fully applies to earthly life.

The unseen exceeds the seen

A restored sense of proportion

The experience of earth is apparent, while the skies remain hidden. What is hidden is much greater than what is apparent. Human sight and experience cover only an extremely limited reality.

As the skies are far vaster than the earth, the unseen is far vaster than the seen. This perspective deepens a believer’s consciousness of the unseen.

The command descends

Earth remains under heavenly governance

The world functions as it does because Allah’s command has been issued from above the heavens. The earth remains completely under the control of governance from above the sky.

The skies

Vast, prior in mention, largely hidden from human experience and essential to both physical and spiritual life.

The earth

Immediate and apparent to human beings, yet small, dependent and fully governed within Allah’s greater dominion.

Divine control and human choice

A sphere of action exists within a system Allah completely controls

Everything in the skies and the earth performs تَسْبِيح (Tasbeeh), the declaration of Allah’s perfection. Human beings receive a choice within creation: to believe, act well and declare His perfection, or to disbelieve, disobey and refrain from extolling the perfection of their Lord and Creator.

Gratitude

Belief, good deeds and Tasbeeh

Human choice can align willingly with the perfection declared throughout creation.

Ingratitude

Disbelief, disobedience and refusal

Human choice can reject obedience while remaining inside a creation that never escapes Allah’s control.

  • Allah permits human beings a limited sphere of control in relation to their actions.
  • That sphere exists entirely within a creation and system over which Allah has complete control.
  • Human beings choose gratitude or ingratitude and are held to account on the Day of Judgement.

Command through the heavens

Power and knowledge encompass the entire created order

“It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things Qadeer (powerful, in control) and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge”

Surah At-Talaq: 12
Ayah 2
