Ayah 52:24 — Visual explanation

Qur'anic text

وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ غِلْمَانٌ لَّهُمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُؤٌ مَّكْنُونٌ

“And boy servants of theirs will be going around serving them, as if they are preserved pearls”.

Key terms and language insights

غِلْمَانٌ (Ghilmaan)

Plural of غُلام (Ghulaam).

  • Refers to boys close to the age of puberty.
  • Can also refer to servants over the age of puberty, especially when possession is indicated by the particle لِ (Li) or another indicator.
  • As in the phrase غِلْمَانٌ لَّهُمْ — “Servants of theirs”.
Morphology: plural → singular غُلام Semantic field: service

مَّكْنُونٌ (Maknoon)

From the verb كَنَّ (Kanna): “to conceal, contain, or shelter”.

  • Describes a hidden, protected nature.
  • Used for things concealed and sheltered — for example, a cave or an eagle’s nest hidden away in a mountain.
  • In لُؤْلُؤٌ مَّكْنُونٌ — “pearls that have been kept hidden away”: implies something preciously veiled, untouched, and preserved in purity and beauty.

These will be boys the likes of which have not been seen before — concealed from us and now revealed.

Grammar and possession indicator

Possession indicator: لِ (Li)

The particle لِ indicates possession/association. In context, it supports the sense of service.

غِلْمَانٌ لَّهُمْ

Visual simile: Preserved pearls

The likeness evokes purity, beauty, and untouched preservation.

  • “Hidden away” protection aligns with the root sense of concealment and shelter.
  • Elegance and luminosity of pearls mirrors the pristine presentation of the servants.

A scene of complete joy: adding children to the environment adds to the joy.

Service in motion: “going around serving” Revelation after concealment Purity and beauty
