“He is the First and the Last. And the Apparent (or obvious) and the Hidden. And He is All-knowing of everything”
الْأَوَّلُThe First
الْآخِرُThe Last

الظَّاهِرُThe Apparent
الْبَاطِنُThe Hidden
01 · Language
Manifestness and hiddenness
The paired words draw on the physical language of elevation and interiority, then establish a contrast between what stands out and what remains concealed.
الظَّاهِرُ · Azh-Zhaahir
الظَّهْر (Azh-Zhahr) refers to the “back,” which also implies the source of a person’s strength.
The الظَّهْر and الظَّاهِرَة of the earth describe thick, solid and elevated ground, such as a ridge or rise.
الظَّواهِرُ refers to the elevated and high parts of land or terrain. The ظَاهِر of a mountain is its top or highest part.
ظَهَرَ describes an item of clothing worn as an outer garment.
ظَاهَرَ means to give support and assistance to or against someone—giving one’s back and strength in support.
ظَهَرْتُ “over/against so and so” means: “I rose above him and prevailed over him.”
أَظْهَرَ اللهُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ means: Allah made the Muslims victorious over the disbelievers.
The root carries the meanings of being apparent and standing out, giving support and assistance, and prevailing or dominating. In this ayah, الظَّاهِرُ stands opposite الْبَاطِنُ, so it denotes that which is apparent, outstanding and obvious.
“It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the Deen of truth to make it prevail (يُظْهِرَ – Yuzh’hiru) over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it”
Surah As-Saff · (9)
الْبَاطِنُ · Al-Baatin
بَطْن (Batn) refers to the human belly, or to the belly and inside of something.
The بَطْن and بَاطِن of the earth refer to what is deep, hidden and low-lying within it.
The بِطَانَة of a garment is its inner lining.
بَطْن identifies the inner part or heart of a place.
بِبَطْنِ مَكّة (Bi-Batni Makkah) refers to the central valley part of Makkah.
الْبَاطِنُ is the opposite of الظَّاهِرُ: the outer, apparent and obvious aspect is the Zhaahir, while the inner and hidden aspect is the Baatin.
02 · Structure
Two pairs of distinct opposites
The repeated conjunction separates four distinct qualities and gives the ayah an unusual structure among the Qur’anic sequences of Allah’s names.
الْأَوَّلُ The First
وَ
الْآخِرُ The Last
الظَّاهِرُ The Apparent
وَ
الْبَاطِنُ The Hidden
The Arabic وَاو (Waw) is fundamentally used for المُغايَرة (Al-Mughaayarah), “difference and distinctness.” The two things connected by وَ are distinct entities, states or actions. Each pair therefore presents two qualities that remain distinct from one another.
الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ
Al-‘Azeezu-l-Hakeem joins names that complement one another. Each is a name of Allah, and their combination also forms a quality.
الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ
Al-Ghafooru-r-Raheem likewise combines complementary names without placing opposites against one another.
Surah Al-Hashr presents many names together without inserting وَ between every name.
الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ
Al-Awwalu Wa-l-Aakhiru Wa-zh-Zhaahiru Wa-l-Baatinu places وَ between every name. This is an unusual occurrence in the Qur’an and preserves each quality’s distinctness.
03 · Relative attributes
Every name establishes a relation
First and Last establish relation across sequence and time. Apparent and Hidden establish relation across manifestation and concealment.
Ibn ‘Ashour and other scholars
Four relative attributes
Ibn ‘Ashour and other scholars consider these four Names— الأوّل، والآخر، والظاهر، والباطن—to be صِفَات إِضَافِيَة (Sifaat Idaafiyah), “Relative attributes,” rather than صِفَات ذَاتِيَّة مَحْضَة (Sifaat Dhaatiyah Mahdah), “Pure essential attributes.”
Being “first” is understood in relation to what comes after. Being “last” is understood in relation to what precedes. Being “Apparent,” “Outer” or “Outward” is understood in relation to what is “Hidden,” “Inner” or “Inward,” and vice versa. Each attribute is qualified by context.
The heavens and the earth The two preceding verses provide the context of السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ. Allah is the First before the heavens and the earth, and the Last after the heavens and the earth.
Manifest and hidden within creation Allah is the most obvious reality of the heavens and the earth and the most hidden truth within them.
Before and after the universe Allah is the First before the beginning of the universe and the Last after the end of the universe.
The reality discovered through contemplation Within the universe, Allah is the most obvious reality to the one who contemplates and the most hidden truth to the one who does not.
04 · Complete knowledge
Knowledge from every beginning to every end
The final statement completes both pairs. Full knowledge encompasses the beginning and ending of a matter, as well as everything apparent and hidden within it.
The axis of sequence
FirstLast
A judge must know the background that preceded a case and the result or act that came at its end. Knowledge of only the ending lacks the beginning; knowledge of only the beginning lacks the ending. Allah knows everything from the very beginning all the way to the very end.
The axis of reality
ApparentHidden
Knowledge of only the obvious surface of a situation cannot establish a complete judgment. Full knowledge contains the apparent reality and the inside story, including every hidden detail. The one who knows both the Zhaahir and the Baatin truly knows the matter.
وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ — “And He is All-knowing of everything” completes the four Names by revealing the scope of Allah’s knowledge: every first, every last, every apparent reality and every hidden reality.
05 · Human orientation
From Allah, toward Allah
The four Names reshape human assumptions about time, priority, perception, prediction and final return.
Beyond created constraints
Allah’s being الْأَوَّلُ, “The First,” and الْآخِرُ, “The Last,” negates the philosophical question of what came before Allah. Allah is not constrained by earthly or human limits of time and place, so such questions have no reality.
Origin and return
Allah is the First and the Last in relation to every human life, not only in relation to the heavens and the earth. We all came from and began with Allah, and we will all return to and end with Allah.
First and last consideration
Allah being the First gives Him priority before everything. Allah being the Last establishes the final destination with Him. Allah therefore stands as the first and last consideration throughout life on earth.
Contemplation unveils
For the one who contemplates, nothing is more obvious or apparent than Allah الظَّاهِرُ. For the one who does not contemplate, nothing is more hidden than Allah الْبَاطِنُ.
The first does not reveal the last
Humans see the first of something and think they can predict its last. The first may be obvious while the ending remains hidden. Allah decides when to make His intent known and apparent and when to keep it hidden.
Manifest and concealed involvement
Allah’s involvement is obvious in many cases and hidden in many others. Sometimes Allah’s plan is apparent, and sometimes it is hidden. The obvious manifests first, and the hidden manifests last.
“Allah is so obvious that He is hidden!” Allah is behind everything witnessed and experienced in creation. This reality is so manifest that people take it for granted, become desensitised to it, and allow it to become hidden from them.
06 · Revelation
The beginning, ending, clarity and depth of revelation
The four Names also frame the origin, completion and expression of divine speech.
01
The source of the first revelations
Allah is the source of the first revelations because He is الْأَوَّلُ, The First.
02
The owner of the final revelation
Allah is the owner of the last of revelation, the Qur’an, because He is الْآخِرُ, The Last. He informs humanity about what happened in the beginning and what will happen in the end.
03
Clear and hidden dimensions
As الظَّاهِرُ and الْبَاطِنُ, Allah made His speech obvious and clear in places and hidden in others.
07 · Al-Imam Al-Alousiy
Existence, causation and the Divine Essence
Al-Imam Al-Alousiy
Insights on the four Names
Al-Imam Al-Alousiy states that He is الْأَوَّلُ (Al-Awwal), “The First,” preceding all created things. Exalted is He: existent before everything, even before time itself.
Al-Imam Al-Alousiy records: He is the First (Al-Awwal) from whom all causes initiate, for He, exalted is He, is the One who brings about those causes; and He is the Last (Al-Aakhir) to whom all things that have been caused (i.e., created) ultimately end up returning to.
Al-Imam Al-Alousiy states that His hiddenness—related to His true reality and essence—from the realisation of the intellects is like His hiddenness from the realisation of the senses, since the reality of the Divine Essence cannot be grasped, neither by the intellect nor by sensory perception.
Al-Imam Al-Alousiy records: “You are الظَّاهِرُ (Azh-Zhaahir) ‘The Manifest’, so nothing is above You in terms of manifestness. You are more manifest than everything, for the manifestation of all things is by You. And You are الْبَاطِنُ (Al-Baatin) ‘The Hidden’, so nothing is beneath You in terms of hiddenness. You are more hidden than everything, for every thing’s reality is known by something other than itself i.e., by You. Whereas You, none knows your true reality other than You.”
08 · Prophetic definition
Nothing before, after, above or beneath Him
“
O Allah, You are the First (Al-Awwal), and there is nothing before You. You are the Last (Al-Aakhir), and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest (Azh-Zhaahir), and there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden (Al-Baatin), and there is nothing beneath You. Settle our debts for us and free us from poverty”.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ explained these Names in a way that renders every other explanation unnecessary. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said.
