Six spans of time
(Ayyaam) is the plural of يَوْم (Yawm). In Arabic, Yawm can denote an unqualified span of time.
The phrase therefore carries the meaning of six periods whose exact measure is known only to Allah.

“It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then rose upon the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah is All-seeing of what you do”.
The creation of the heavens and the earth cannot be confined to the twenty-four-hour cycle by which human beings measure a day on Earth.
(Ayyaam) is the plural of يَوْم (Yawm). In Arabic, Yawm can denote an unqualified span of time.
The phrase therefore carries the meaning of six periods whose exact measure is known only to Allah.
An earthly day is measured by one full rotation of Earth with respect to the Sun. Earth is only a tiny part of the universe, and the universe can be considered to represent only the first of the seven heavens.
The universe has been estimated to be 13.8 billion years old. A time scale involving the whole universe and six greater heavens lies far beyond human imagination.
Allah requires no time to bring creation into being. The six periods establish time as part of the created order: everything within this existence proceeds through time and undergoes change over time.
The earth, the seven heavens, and every event in human life unfold within the temporal order Allah created.
“His command is only, that when He intends a thing that He says to it: “Be” and it is”
The reality of the Throne and Allah’s rising over it lies beyond perception. Its Arabic expression still communicates elevation, complete stability, and sovereignty.
Al-‘Arsh referred to the roof of a house, a wooden canopy over a water well, and the raised upper surface or dorsal arch of the foot.
A wooden trellis around which vines grow and any canopy used for shade is called an ‘Areesh or ‘Arsh. The throne built for a king to recline upon carries the same central meaning: an elevated structure.
Istawaa carries the linguistic meanings of reaching evenness, being level and straight, and possessing full balance and stability.
The expression portrays a King upon His Throne in a constant condition of balance, stability, and composure. The kingdom beneath the Throne remains completely under Allah’s control.
Events may appear chaotic in their outward form, yet their hidden reality always proceeds under Allah’s absolute control, order, and plan. This displays Allah as الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ — “The Ultimate Authority and Ultimately Wise”.
Human beings did not witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor did they witness the creation of their own selves. Its time and manner remain beyond human knowledge.
“I did not make them witness to the creation of the heavens and the earth or to the creation of their own selves”
Al-Kahf: 51Allah did not rest after creating the heavens and the earth. He rose above the Throne, and no fatigue touched Him through their creation.
“And He did not become tired from their creation”
Surah Al-Ahqaf: 33The ayah refutes the Christian claim that Allah rested on the seventh day.
The ayah traces movement through earth and heaven. Nothing enters, exits, descends, or rises outside Allah’s knowledge.
Water, seed, and human beings enter the earth.
Plants, crops, vegetation, and one day humanity emerge from it.
Rain, Rizq, angels, and revelation descend from the sky. Some are manifest and apparent; others remain hidden.
Allah’s command, أَمْر (Amr), descends as the first stage. Its implementation appears as the end of that command.
(Ya’ruju) describes ascent marked by incline, turn, or gradual movement rather than a purely straight vertical line.
The wording can portray not only what rises into the sky, but also what inclines and leans toward it. The soul descends from the sky while remaining inclined back toward the sky.
The root conveys deviation from straightness through bending, tilting, slanting, or curving.
A people incline away from a path, or a thing leans toward the right or left.
Ascent occurs through an incline or tilted route.
A staircase enables step-by-step ascent along a gradual, non-vertical incline.
Lameness or limping reflects sideways deviation from the gait used on level ground. Walking uphill similarly changes the gait and gives the root its sense of rising.
Allah’s nearness cannot be measured by physical distance or confined by the worldly limits of time and space.
Allah’s reality lies beyond human perception. Questions that reduce His nearness to location or ask how He can be in multiple places impose the constraints of worldly physics upon the One who transcends them.
Divine nearness establishes that no person is spiritually alone or abandoned.
Nothing is hidden from Allah. He sees, hears, and knows every action, intention, and condition of the heart.
When His nearness becomes manifest in awareness, Allah becomes the first consideration rather than the last thought.
Awareness of divine nearness builds consciousness of Allah and resists feelings of loneliness and abandonment.
“Have you not seen that Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth? There is no Najwa of three but He is their fourth nor of five but He is their sixth nor of less than that or more but He is with them wheresoever they may be. And afterwards on the Day of Resurrection He will inform them of what they did. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything”
Surah Al-Mujadilah: 7
“And We are closer to him than the jugular vein”
Surah Qaf: 16
“He said: Nay, verily with me is my Lord. He will show me a way”
Ash-Shu’araa’: 62This is the first direct address to the reader in the surah. The sudden shift to “you” brings the realities of creation, sovereignty, and knowledge into personal life.
Allah governs every movement in the universe. Human beings then live, choose, and act beneath His uninterrupted observation.
Although Allah is with you and possesses the power to prevent you, He watches what you choose to do.
بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ — “of what you do” — appears before بَصِيرٌ — “All-seeing”. This word order places special emphasis upon human actions:
“And Allah is especially over what you do All-seeing”.
Baseer returns to Basar, meaning sight, vision, and perception, and to Baseerah, meaning insight and discernment. Allah does not merely see the outward form of an action. He possesses complete insight into the deed, its intention, and its hidden reality.
The ayah moves from the immeasurable creation of the heavens and the earth to the most personal human action. The Creator who knows every movement across earth and heaven is with every person, wherever they are, and sees completely whatever they do.
